Honestly that is a really good move from Epic. At least they try to improve the story.
Personally, I found the Maria story or Marcus Father story really bland and terribly told. The Carmines had some great moments. Overall the setting is really great and convincing. The characters are okay, some dialogues are genius though.
I think some bioware writers needed to goto this pixar workshop, I think bioware lost its way in how to write a good arcing story and needs to be reminded.
Well, whatever the outcome of GoW:J, you can't say they didn't try.
