ASUS Direct CU II 6970 reporting weird temperatures, shutting down when used.

My brand spanking new 6970 ran like a dream for about half an hour, then I rebooted and it's reporting temps of 80c+ idle, yet when I feel the heatpipes of the heatsink, they're cold. Whenever I start a game or anything that uses the GPU, the temps launch up to over 120+ and force the system to shut down. WTF is going wrong?
Probably a broken heat sensor, the card thinks it is overheating and shuts down the computer, I recommend RMA'ing the GPU.
I just got it off the bloody delivery man, do you think Scan.co.uk will do a next-day swapsies sort of thing as it's DOA in a way?
Does your computer just shut off with no warning or no error?
If so, I had a similar issue with my HD5830. Problem was that my PSU wasn't supplying enough Amps (HD5830 required >35 but my PSU was around 31). My wattage was fine (650) but look into the amperage requirements of the card and the amps on your PSU.
Screen just goes black.
It's not a PSU issue, it's a false-heat issue...

Unlikely, as they need to verify the problem is real although do double check that. Retailers generally have a turn around of less than a week for an RMA.

I also took out installation insurance, if that makes a difference.
