Basically the opposite of that hate video game thread. I love games that offer upgradable equipments, massive bonus points if it also changes its appearance like in the first Bioshock.
A.i that actually helps instead of being idiots.
good realistic gun feel, payday pulled it off nicely imo, with recoil being where the gun is pointing and not just random bullet spread like BF3.
A huge navigable map
Customization Interesting story Being able to influence the events in a game (choices I do have an effect) Not being forced to do something specific; Game allows me to do things differently without punishing me
Well designed difficulty levels. Not just higher damage and more resisting opponents, more of them and smarter ones instead.
One of my favorite things a game can do is getting somebody good with sound. Making all the little sounds right can really make for better immersion. Kind of linked to the first one but having a wide sound track for background music is great as repetitive music can be extremely immersion breaking. Decent level design. As in I would not know without thinking about it that the world ends. This does not always have to mean just a big world it can mean that you can enter many buildings and that most doors are not locked and stuff (for a sandbox anyway). Varied animations are always nice. Seeing identical animations for when you do stuff regularly can break my immersion sometimes especially if it is a long animation. Well designed vehicle control in games is something I really like. I hate playing games that have crappy vehicle control. Those that pull it off give me a much more better experience. Letting me customize my characters look and in some cases ability is always a plus in my book. This goes for weaponry or items such as vehicles as well.
When a game almost makes me cry because of someone dying. yes The Walking Dead, looking at you..
A challenge.
Satisfying gunplay. When guns feel and look satisfying and it feels like you are shooting a gun. As a bonus to this, I like when both you and your enemies can kill each other quickly with a few shots like in Metro's ranger mode.
Linear corridors of terrorists who aim at the wall behind you
A unique concept. I'm sick and tired of generic military shooters and zombie games. They're boring. If the game developers think outside the box, they'll make interesting games that will be worth playing.
I like it when I do some random optional thing and a character reacts to it.
When your character doesn't act like a pussy/normal person, I hate games where your character is constantly freaking out about the situation they're in/can't handle themselves. I love hitscan detection for damage over all other forms. Games that let me kill people/targets quick via headshots.
Gratifying weapons Visceral combat Likeable characters Gameplay that greatly reward skillfulness without demanding it constantly.
Shotguns that do satisfying things when shot, like throwing enemies backwards and bucking in your hands. Honestly, I can't think of a single video game weapon I like more than a plain ol' shotgun.
Ragdoll effects.
The last reason that I am still loving Source games and mods is because of how the movement feels in Source games. You just feel so grounded and in control, you can jump on whatever you want, wherever you want, it just feels great. Killing Floor also has really good movement. Payday 2 is also nice. Then I go and play something like Dead Island where it feels like your character has on roller skates and it's just unbearable. Even jumping in Human Revolution feels awkward. It's really one of the most immediate things I notice in games, and I'm not one of those "no legs 0/10 game" people but it instantly destroys all immersion if my character is moving around the level like its a huge slip and slide.
Physics engines that let you stack garbage in corner, whilst ignoring the mission progression. Crysis, Half-Life, e.t.c.
the ability to do many things in video games with little to no real life repercussions that you could not do in reality is easily the redeeming factor of video games for me
A good dose of really great humor. I hate super duper serious games.
Cool HUDs Interesting loading screens, if they have to be there. Guns that have power
good realistic gun feel, payday pulled it off nicely imo, with recoil being where the gun is pointing and not just random bullet spread like BF3.
That is why i love Receiver, though i wish it had more depth than running around to find tapes with cryptic messages on them, while avoiding robots and turrets that can kill you instantly.

Likeable characters.
Say what you want about BF3, but it has some superb sound design. This is going to sound corny, but it makes you feel like you're really in the heat of a huge battle.
cool energy weapons, i.e; hyperblaster, gluon gun, railgun especially Black Mesa's gluon gun. feels powerful, but within reason
Good soundtrack
your character's appearance and behavior affecting the way npcs react to you
When in an RPG (particularly a JRPG) different weapons and armor actually effect the look of your character.
