On my HP Laptop and the dock, I have one USB port on each which has a + next to the USB logo. A friend told me that it's a Powered USB port, which can provide more power to the device, such as external hard drives that need it. Is this correct?
Yeah.. Couldnt you have just googled this?
Your guess is probably correct.
Ext Hard drive: Answer = it depends on the model. The 5VDC from a usb drive is for devices that dont have their own power supplies like a usb flash drive. A hard drive or a drive in general that has a motor in it needs a 12/5 VDC split and usb only outputs 5VDC so for an external hard drive
It's for external power
