Okay so my pc died today and since i'm not planning into buying a new one anytime soon I want to use my laptop as my new battlestation, my only issue is that I have to take my laptop to work/school daily and once i'm home I have to connect everything to my laptop:
2x Screens
Sound
Mouse / keyboard
3 HDD's
Internet cable
Now instead of unplugging everything every single day there must be a easy solution how-ever i haven't found it yet so i'm hoping facepunch can help me,
The laptop is a Asus x5qs
specs:
Core Quad i7 2630QM (overclocked @ 3.0GHZ)
16GB Ram
256GB SSD
Nvidea 555GT 2GB

Some laptops have port replicators and docking stations that are for this. Your laptop doesn't.
You're just going to have to deal with it.
I guess if you REALLY wanted to, you could fit everything into a couple USBs with a USB hub, two USB video adaptors and a USB sound card :v:
If you laptop has USB3 you could look at the HP 3005PR USB 3.0 Port Replicator + a few USB to Sata/IDE adapters, but that will cost a bob or two.
Also, don't expect to be playing any games through a USB3 port replicator. The bandwidth is not great.
As someone suggested earlier, using a USB hub+ethernet card+sound card+ide/sata adapter would work for everything else if you were prepared to plug the screens in separately.
If you have a monitor with HDMI, you can plug your speakers into the monitor and use that to reduce one cable.
When I dock my laptop, I have 3 wires to plug in: HDMI, Power, and USB.
You could run the audio over the USB instead, but that's not going to help.
Hmm yeah it seems like there isn't really any option except just plugging in everything since im using it for video editing / gaming.
Do you guys have any experience with a usb DVI adapter/card does it lack a lot of performance or is it barely noticeable?

The main problem is with USB3 as a video output is the fact that USB is run on the CPU (that isn't the best way to put it) but high USB3 activity will hammer the CPU.
USB2 was bandwith limited for displays, but not so much the case with USB3.
It all comes down to what you are using it for.
If you are just browsing, watching 1080p video, or even video editing (providing your not rendering in real time) you will be fine with a USB3 Video Dock, as the interrupts will fit nicely, but forget about gaming over a USB3 video card.
I've tried it, and it's not bearable in my opinion.
The only real single-cable (not including power) solution currently is Thunderbolt, and that's very machine limited and costly.
You could get it down to 4 wires, or if you are only gaming on one monitor you could get it down to HDMI+USB3(for secondary monitor)+Power.
