I've recently bought a computer off a close mate of mine, I'm currently posting off of it now, runs okay.
Here's the specs:
Dell Optiplex 760
Windows Vista Business
Processor: Intel Core 2Duo CPU E7400 @ 2.80GHz
Memory (RAM): 4.00GB
It's running an onboard graphics card which I intend to replace but what kind of graphics card should I be on the lookout for?
Also it's got 80 gig hardrive, I plan on getting a 1TB hardrive for $150 hardrive from a local shop within the month.
So was it worth the buy? any suggestions as to what else i would need for it?
mobo?
That seems very worth the buy.
Damn thats an awesome score for only 50 Bucks!!
US dollars?
Nz Currency.

YOU GOT AN ABSOLUTE BARGAIN!!!
There is only one way to explain this.....Was your mate drunk?
Damn. Nice deal.

You should get a generic 9600 GT to do the job or an 4830.

???
I wouldn't bother with a 9600, I'd go straight for a 9800 GT as there isn't much price difference but a whole lot of performance difference

You can get alot better than a 9800 for the same price.
Now just take the dell badge off and you can use it with pride

How much are you willing to spend?
When I read the title I expected to see some piece of crap PII or something, that's an incredible deal!
Oh god the motherboard and psu...
Pull out the CPU and possibly the Mobo and build around that. The rest of the innards are pretty shitty.
Mobo/case is most likely dell's btx formfactor which pretty much fucks your ability it upgrade properly.

Why disagree? Okay, the RAM too, missed that.
@TrafficMan: He could always try, I mean, look at that PSU, I'd be surprised if it didn't die if he puts a decent card in there.
It looks like its actually normal ATX, but that case probably has fantastic airflow.
Great starter PC for 50 bucks.
Whats the power supply on that thing? If your getting a 9800 gt, make sure its at least a 550 wat.
Great buy for $50, because you know you can always ramp it up bro.

I lol'd.
A 9800 GT does NOT need a 550 "wat" PSU. You could probably run it with a 350W.
I have a 4870 and the whole system draws about 400W...from my TX650W (overkill, I know)

From the reviews I've seen everywhere (and including the tech stores I go to), Most have said 400-500W. I just though 550 would be safe. Maybe a little overkill :P
500W quality would do fine, hell even a quality 450W.
uh, a quality 350W PSU could handle a 9800 GT.
I give you £35 for the cpu.

It's a proprietary BTX formfactor, not a flipped ATX board. And because of the way they designed the case (no slot above the PCIe x16) he can't fit a GPU that has a dual-slot backplate w/o modding the end that gets locked/screwed down.

And Dell usually under-rates their power supplies, so he might have 50-100 hidden watts. As long as it can put out enough amps on +12V, he's fine.
That's pretty good for $50
actually that's pretty fucking awesomlly good for $50
Stick a nice video card in there and you will have one hell of a system for the price.
