Hello, just wanted to inform everyone that the App Store is launching on the 6th of January :)
Any idea what time?
Any idea what time?
Nope.
Hooray, I don't have enough space to even download 10.6.5.
Hooray, I don't have enough space to even download 10.6.5.
Congratulations!
I am officially embarrassed to own a MacBook now.
Although this isn't the only method of getting Mac apps (unlike the iPhone), I hate how greedy Apple are, attempting to take more of the profit.
DogGunn, usually you provide good reasoning, but what the hell do you expect them to do? Apple are a business, and like any other business they exist to make a profit.
It's childish and dumb to say something like you're embarrassed about it.
Congratulations!
Boooycott, I mean. Yeah, that's it.
The mac I own can't go above 10.5.8 :saddowns:
Makes a damned good bedside computer though. Gotta love those old 1 GHZ eMacs, and the 256 mb of RAM EATS up any game I throw at it. :smug:
Dem eMacs are lovely. My school was throwing them out not too long ago and I now use it as an OS9 machine.
App Store is open now, update yarr macs!
I've written an overview here, for anyone whom is interested but can't/doesn't want to upgrade.

I think they mentioned something about a app store like thing ages ago in Win8 notes or something. It isn't exactly a new idea mind you, so anyone who complains can shut the hell up and return to their ignorance holes.
Holy shit I've got 7GB worth of updates. Hooray for disabling SU daemon.

Embarrassed because you own a MacBook, who gives a fuck what others think. 70/30 developers/apple isn't it? The app store is very handy to have, great for new users to find useful applications as that was one of the problems of getting a Mac in September. As a Windows user I had no idea of what good apps were available.
Got Twitter, SketchBookExpress and Angry Birds which looks and works quite well. Quick and easy to use. I just wish the updates wouldn't default my desktop wallpaper.

The sales that developers are going to get out of the store will probably outweigh the profit that apple is taking.

This one actually came with OS X on it.
I always thought Apple meant great interfaces and UIs.
And yet, we have Apple letting through these gems through the App Store like
time to step away from xcode, son and go into therapy. why do you want to inflict this shit on others?
bonus points: this shit is in the top paid listing. people really dont give a fuck if you stab them in the eye with a plastic piece of dogshit do they
Haha, I tried to reply so many times to this thread, and kept losing my text (due to connection dropping out), I just settled for something that was quick to type.
My main gripe with the Mac AppStore is not the profits they're going to reap, but the restrictions they've placed on it, and also lack of promoting competion.
For instance, installing Google Chrome asks you what search engine you want to use. This is good.
Installing 10.6.6 doesn't even bother to let you know that there are other AppStores for Mac, for instance, Steam.
You'll probably find, as computers are designed to be open in nature (unlike mobile devices, which have been allowed an exemption), an anti-trust suit might appear. Similar to what was seen with Microsoft and Internet Explorer - or at least I hope it does.
Too bad none of the browsers like FF or Chrome aren't on the service yet, and customization, for example Iconbox and CandyBar.

And with ability's ability to say what goes on or not makes me wonder if they will be. Let's find out and see.
Having an AppStore will just make people think there is one place to get your apps and that's it.

I had the chance to get one for 20 bucks and I really regret passing it up.

Wow that was quick
Probably gonna get banned for it, but hey, tested this, it works:
Install the latest Snow Leopard update(10.6.6). Sign into the new App Store (in your dock). Download Twitter, it's free. Then go to Applications folder, locate Twitter, right click, Show Package Contents, navigate to Contents folder and copy _CodeSignature, _MASReceipt and CodeResources.
Download Angry Birds ( nope ).. run the dmg file.. drag Angry Birds into the Applications folder. right click, Show Package Contents, navigate to Contents folder and delete _CodeSignature, _MASReceipt and CodeResources. Now paste in the files you copied from the Twitter.app .
Done. Enjoy Angry Birds and any other .app file from the new Mac App Store that you can find online ;)
BAMMM
Apple suggests you check that the receipt is actually your app's. Lazy devs.
So far the app store is great, just installed sketchbook express and it "installed" flawlessly. Overall I love it except for the usual app store bullshit where some crappy apps make it to the top 10 just because they contain the word "sex" in the title. I wish that there was an option for every app to download a limited time demo version of it on the same page as the regular dl or somesuch as I like to try before I buy (espescially since it's so easy to uninstall).
Shall we make this the official app store thread?
