• Starting a website?

I've been trying to get my own website started, but I'm not sure where to start. I've tried researching this but there's so much misinformation out there that I can't figure out what to do. I want to avoid godaddy and all of those other poor excuses for website hosts out there. There's just so many that I can't seem to find what is viable and what isn't. I checked out www.oneandone.com which looks good since the web domains are way cheaper and you get some decent features too. Here are my questions.

If I only buy a web domain, how do I start the site?
Do I need to buy some kind of hosting service separately from the domain?
How do I control/update a site once I have a domain?
I know the basics of, HTML, a little Java, and even less PHP. Should I use templates from hosting services, hire a designer, or is there a better alternative?
So yeah, probably stupid questions, but I am in the dark when it comes to this stuff.
http://000webhost.com/ I'd say start with their free service (which includes hosting and a domain) and learn a lot of PHP. Once you feel you have enough knowledge and are skilled enough, you should upgrade to their paid service which gets you a com/net/whatever domain and better hosting for a relatively cheap price. Also, to finally answer your questions: -You need to have a hosting service. If you JUST buy a domain, it's usually a redirect to your other domain that the hosting service gives you. (example: Hosting site gives you "Lolsite.host56.net" and the domain service redirects "lolsite.com" to that.) -Usually a hosting service will include a custom domain. Unless you run your own server. Which is a bad idea and takes a lot of bandwidth lol. But, like my previous example, they may give you a not-so-good domain. But the vast majority has good domains. -You control and update the site via FTP. -I think it's a good idea to design everything yourself, that way you get the experience and you know exactly what you want. But you can always rely on templates, and if you don't' feel like designing it yourself, go ahead and get a designer. Less cash out of your pocket if you use templates or learn to do it yourself though.

It looks nice, but it's like 5 bucks per month for stuff like a simple .com domain. I's understandable for free hosting and all, but still seems like a bit much. Any other recommendations? [editline]05:27PM[/editline] Could I buy the domain I wanted somewhere else and then use their free service?
Yes, you could. But they're free hosting isn't that good. It's good for free (probably the best). But paid is always better than free. If you pay, you're not just getting a domain, you're getting more bandwidth, more space, more features, more customizable stuff, more templates for stuff, etc.
Comparing 1and1 and 00webhost, I'm not sure which would be better... [editline]06:26PM[/editline] Any other alternative sites?
Not that I know. Just do a google search.
try www.host-ed.net they have a free hosting service and you get a ___.host-ed.net domain for free without any adds, it's nice to start understanding how the domain/hosting things actually work before you jump into a payed host imo. Also you can check www.tizag.com, here you will find tutorials about everything related to web-development/design and it also explain a lot about how domains and hosts work. good luck with your website Oh and to update your website you gonna need a FTP program like Firezilla for example, with that program you can connect to your host and replace/manage the files you used to create the page. (.htm's etc)
Not that I know. Just do a google search.
You try that and see how many advertisements/scams come up.

The person who said hosting24 is bad to go with does not know what they are talking about. They have really good service and are worth every penny, they also allow you to use loopholes in their TOS which is quite amusing. For the website, its best to do it yourself. It might be worth visiting the web programming section later on, they can help you out a lot on this type of thing.
I'm using 1and1 myself. They aren't bad at all, no complaints, but they aren't anything special either.
Actually, I'd go a completely different route. Make your own home server. I recently (as in about 10 minutes ago) set up my own home web server that I now design and host websites on. Instead of paying a ton for hosting services, you can just pay around 15$ a year for a domain name and all the hosting and storage charges don't exist. As I'm sure you know, any old dusty slow computer can be used as a server. You can even use your personal computer, as Apache uses barely any resources. Bandwidth, however, may need an upgrade depending on your traffic and upspeed. I bought my domain with godaddy.com and it works perfect. It's a little different setting up a domain for your own server rather than their hosting services, but if you'd like, I'd be glad you help you. If you host a website with the same service you buy a domain name with, it's really easy to set up. If you want to host at home, it takes a little work but it won't take long at all. The server software I used was Apache, it was extremely easy to set up and is fairly easy to maintain. The whole thing is set up with barely any configuration. You have to designate a folder where your site is stored, and you place all your .html files in there. I'd suggest buying/obtaining Dreamweaver. Otherwise you'll have to use a site template generator thingy. Updating your website is easy as fuck too. All you have to do is restart the apache service and it's updated. So uh. I recommend you host one at home
Wow I've never seen a moderator start a serious question thread before, how exciting!
