Lots of problems, programs randomly crashing. Un-prompted restarts!

This has only been happening the past couple of days, today being the worst, my PC randomly restarted when I was doing a virus scan (Obviously a virus) But I have over a TB of data and if I format I will have to re-download it all, and have nowhere to back it up to. Should I just format and start from scratch?
Might be CPU instability. Clean power might be becoming an issue as well. Hard drive failure is a possibility.
If you are sure that it's a virus and you can't remove it:
Use Partition Magic to split your partition and then put the stuff you need on the other partition, reformat and reinstall windows on the normal partition and then merge them together.
I have a Q6600 running @ Stock 2.4 GHz, it's just over a year and 4 months old and the temps never get any higher than 60 C, my HDD never rises above 50 C. Do you really think my HDD might fail?

Can windows be installed and booted from and external hard drive? It's newer and is probably less prone to failing.

I have enough space to back up ALL of my files onto my external hard drive, should I do that over night and then format my internal harddrive and upgrade to windows 7?
ORRRR...
Get a Linux LiveCD and back up your important stuff to a hard drive/memory stick and then reinstall windows.
Just be careful what you back up...don't accidentally back up the virus.
I don't think it was a virus, Windows Update hadn't told me there had been updates and I'd missed out on 4 of them. I think it was that.

OK, updating windows fixed some of the processes crashing, but things like TF2 will crash when I open them?
