I have windows vista home premium.
My laptop has got directx 11 on it but that means i cant play g mod, portal and cs:s.
Does anyone know how i can install 8.1 so they will run if so link if you can please.
You can run them in DirectX 8 mode or something, not sure of the exact way to go about it though. :/
Google it.
Let me see if I remember it...
Right click on the game on steam and click properties. Go to launch options and write -dxlevel 81
Click ok and it should work.
Wait, what? How do you have DX11 on Vista? Is that possible?
And why would that prevent you from playing it? Doesn't that mean they launch in DX9 mode by default?
uuhhh
you do realize Direct3D has retrocompatibility right

That's what I thought. TF2 and the likes only go up to DX9 and both me and my brother can both run them fine on Windows 7.
ive tried the -dxlevel 81 100s of times il give you my specs
windows vista home premium 6.0
asus x71q
prosessor: pentium (r) dual core cpu t4200 @ 2.00ghz
3036mb ram
directx version: directx 11
DirectX 11 is on both Windows 7 and Vista. It was just that DX11 got launched when Windows 7 was released.
What's the actual level of DirectX implemented by the graphics card? I have DX11 because I'm on Windows 7, but my card only supports DX10.

DX11 is a downloadable update for Vista.
What is your actual graphics card? It says DirectX 11 is installed but that doesn't mean your graphics card supports it. Judging from the processor, I don't think you have a DX11 graphics card.

How do i find out my graphics card thing?
Why can't you play them? And why 8.1?
This sounds really retarded becuase you can play older games with newer versions of Directx

Download speccy, take a screenshot and post it. However, considering you're on a laptop.....

Ah.....
I looked up the Asus X71Q laptop, and it seems it can only have an Intel GMA 4500 card, which is utter shit. The card itself supports DirectX 10, but it'll already perform very badly in DirectX 9 games from the last generation, including GMod / TF2 / Portal.
Mobile intel (R) 4 series express chipset family thats what the card is.

No, that's the motherboard chipset.

We'll have to conclude that your laptop is not capable of running Source games decently. Maybe only if you set it to the worst settings possible.
hmm whats the graphics card actually come under and if you can how do i upload a screenshot?
It should run counter strike source until the beta is updated upon it.

The gma 4500HD that is.
Hell, even my netbook which has a GMA 950 can run HL2 in DX 8.1 at around 20 fps
i got css working but my screen size goes funny and the mouse wont work so i use touch pad
i used -dxlevel 11 and it worked XD
run the game with the "-dxlevel 81" parameter

ive tried it on g mod css and portal.
When i first got css it worked great for about 5 weeks then decided to stop.
DXlevel81 wont work but -dxlevel11 worked for css.
directx 11 is faggot

I have that chipset and get 15-30 FPS in-game on any source game. Lower fps in open areas.
And this is with the "recommended" settings for my computer. I found that setting those to lower settings decreased my framerate by about 5-7 FPS.

You can't blame DirectX when your computer is shit. Also since -dxlevel 11 doesn't exist it defaults at like 7 or something.

Things don't decide to stop working. There is always something in the background (May it be the computer, the hardware, or in most cases, the end user(you)) that causes things to stop. Since DX11 can run DX10, and 9 applications you shouldn't have much of an issue with any of the applications.
Have you tried running these programs with administrator access? And did you update your graphics card drivers lately.
All versions of DirectX have legacy support for previous versions of DirectX. Basically DX 9 games will run on an DX11 computer.
Some mobile graphics cards don't have full support for the DX Shader Model standard, and therefore have issues running 3D games.
Though, did you install your graphics cards drivers directly from the manufacturers website (either ATI or NVIDIA) or were they already installed?

He doesn't know what retrocompatibility means.
