• Virgin 20Mb Broadband going slow.

Okay the internet I have is 20Mb, which i know it will never give you 20mb but it should be alot higher than it is right now. I do get my internet throttled for downloading alot during the day but it goes down to 300Kb. During the night where the internet should be the fastest it goes 1.2mb at the most. Paying for a 20Mb connection and getting 1.2mb is stupid. It should be much higher than that. I was wondering if there is anything I could do? Would it help if i called up virgin and asked them why i'm getting such a slow speed. Does it also depend on the router I use, since it is quite old and we have had it for around 2 years now.
It shouldnt be the router, do you know how far away you are from the exchange?
I have Virgin and keep getting crap speeds but it is because my housemate leaves his computer on ALL DAY downloading stuff. How many people are on your network?

We download ALOT but they do throttle it but they shouldnt throttle ater 12, that's when I get my 1.2mb but it's still too slow for 20mb. It's the same even when i'm the only one on the network.
Hmm, Virgin offer 20 Mb, are you sure you aren't measuring in MB? I made that mistake before, stuff like steam measure in Bytes rather than bits so each Byte is 8 bits. So if you pay for 20 Mb (bits) that is 2.5 MB and then that is split between the number of people using the internet. If the b is lower case it is bits if it is capital it is Bytes.
20 megabits divided by 8 is your speed.
I think the problem is MB=/=Mb However, if there is still a problem then you should call your ISP and check you are on the highest profile. The same happened to me (I was stuck on a slow profile) and they put me on a faster profile. It may make your line unstable though, so check before you do.
I had virgin media internet with a similar problem (with massive packet loss), and i discovered the only useful, and practical solution was to switch companies. Tech support is awful there
Thanks guys. I am mixed up with the Mb MB, it confuses my which is which, but 1.2mb is still dumb. I will give them a ring and see if they can do anything to increase my speed at all. Thanks alot.

This is what I get: And am happy to even get that fast.
I've been really happy with my VM connection. I have had this connection since ~2000 (64kbps broadband anyone?) and it has never really failed me. I am on 10Mb currently: Take note: Distance. Tech support should have it sorted, they were nice with me. My Terrayon modem decided to die after years of service and they sent a tech out. quick chat with the guy and it was replaced.
On wifi: Only had a problem when the router bugged out and had to be turned off for a while.
Think someone is overcompensating there...
As if I'd get anything less with 4 other housemates.
if you download a certain amount during peak time virgin will throttle your download speed so you're basically restricted to downloading big things over night.

Not too bad, considering I'm not on fiber optics
This is what mine currently says on Speedtest.net That's another problem, it says 10Mb when they said they would upgrade us to 20Mb about 4 months ago. I will have to contact them since they obviously haven't put it through... :argh:
So whats with everybody showing off their epenis's?
So whats with everybody showing off their epenis's?
You're just jealous because you have a small epenis
If it's ADSL then who fucking cares if it's up to 20Mbit. You can't say I KNOW IT WON'T REACH THE FULL 20 BUT IT SHOULD BE HIGHER if it's an ADSL up to 20Mbit plan because if you're too far away from the exchange to get faster then tough shit as far as they're concerned. Just because they say up to 20Mbit does not mean in any shape or form that you SHOULD be getting fast internet. Shit, I was paying for up to 24Mbit and I was on 0.5Mbit due to distance from the exchange. [editline]12th January 2011[/editline] I guess I missed the bit where he's confusing megabits and megabytes. My point still stands though I guess.
I have 20Mbit cable, running only Spotify during the test and I'm the only one in the household. Yours is pretty low though.

Spotify is P2P

They genuinely don't care as long as its UP TO what they say. It could be 0.002 MB/s and they could still argue it's up to 1000 MB/s Still, thats an extreme and is probably classified as false advertising, but you get the idea.
Virgin media is cable, not ADSL. For those who don't know. As such "Distance from the exchange" Is irrelevent. If you aren't getting the service, Contact them. Your cable service is probably out of spec. (There's also Forums where you can post your line spec from your modem's service page... http://192.168.100.1) I needed a line attenuator fitted at one point (This has since been removed as they fixed the issues)

Virgin is FTTN (Which is why I never call it a fibre service, It's more like a cable service backed by a fibre infrastructure) You also have to factor in the fact that the cabling used in NTL's/Telewest's/Virgin's is much more suited to broadband than BTs aging network of copper that was originally intended for voice/fax.
