• Reformat 'Mac' only hard drive?
    5 replies, posted
Hey I have a Hard Drive that I use for College and its coming near the end of my course. When I bought the hard drive, It said "Mac Only", is it possible to reformat it and get it to work on my Windows 7 PC? I have plugged it in and it says "failed to install device software" then in the system tray it says "unknown device" also it doesn't show up as removable storage in windows explorer Thanks

Format it as NTFS and it should work properly (Keep in mind this will nuke all data on the drive, also be careful that you are only formatting this drive, and not your main drive). I don't see why it couldn't work with Windows.
You need a bootable formatter. You can find them if you google for them.

Download the Ultimate Boot CD or Ubuntu Live CD. Both of them offer formatting tools that are very easy to use.
Download any live gnulinux CD actually. Doesn't matter if its ubuntu or knoppix. if its live, and features gparted, it'll work. And it being a 'mac only' harddrive is just to fool you. But if you bought a "mac only" harddrive just because it said 'mac only' just means they won.
