Is there anyway for an iPod Touch just to "reset itself"?

So, I was over at a friend's house two days ago, when one of my friends asked to see my other friend's iPod. He was hesitant, as he had a lot of personal shit on there, but he agreed, and let him see it. He used it for a while, playing with a Text-To-Speech app he had already found on the App Store, when the Battery died. My friend gave it back, explaining the battery was dead.
He hooked his iPod up to his Xbox 360 (he doesn't have a PC, which is partially why he's pissed, as he has a nice, $400 Apple iBrick on his hands,) when it gave him the factory setting picture. The picture you first get when you activate your iPod. (I'll post it below)
We do think that our friend reset his iPod solely to be a dickhead, as he had tons of shit, about a year or so of downloaded music, personal pictures, videos, etcetra. But, just to be sure, is there anyway that it could've just "reset itself"?
EDIT: (Also, he has a 64 Gigabyte, Third Generation iPod Touch.)

you cant just reset an ipod like that. it takes time, lots of time
no way he could've did it
One would assume no, but I don't own one.
I do believe there is a factory default button on it though, but I'm not sure if that also deletes whatever you had stored on it.
Yeah, I've never had an iPod personally, but my friend did tell me that there is a Factory Settings button to restore it.
i'm assuming your friend has a backup somewhere

He can back up his music, but he informed me that he had tons of personal picture that he didn't back up, and I doubt he can back those up. As I said, he doesn't have a PC. I'm helping him restore his music through iTunes on my pc tomorrow.

Tap whipe everything button and then hard reset Et voilà iPod needs to be restored.
I'm pretty sure it's only possible to reset an iPod through iTunes..
Hold Home + Power for 10sec and keep holding home = Needs to be plugged to iTunes and restored, vóila, someone did it to your friend on purpose.
there is stuff to get it out recovery mode
Like connecting to iTunes.
Download TinyUmbrella, click "Kick Device Out of Recovery". And save SHSHs while you're there.
