There's a problem with my fan that can probably only be fixed by removing and looking at the heatsink, but if I remove the screws it doesn't come off. I'm running a real risk here as I've unplugged the heatsink and the card will overheat if I leave the computer on too long.
Is there a latch or something I'm missing?
Shouldn't you like, switch off the PC before removing the heat sink?
probably the paste sticking it down
you do realise you'll need to replace the paste on there now, right?
Shut down your computer god damn it.
I did. I was just seeing how unstable it was without the heatsink plugged in. I have paste available. It's not the paste sticking it down, there's something physically "clipping" it on there.
The heatsinks I've used have all had latches.
You took the heatsink of a 4890 off with the computer still running to see how unstable it would get?
:/

Why on earth do you want to see how it runs without a heat-sink, just to give you some advice, it wont. Have fun with your broken GPU. Unless you have a better replacement heat-sink you have no reason to remove the old one for any reason.
No, I unplugged it, I can't figure out HOW to remove it.

I need to remove the old one because the fan is making a loud buzzing noise and I can only see myself fixing it by removing the heatsink.

It ran just fine without the damn heatsink, that's not what I'm asking for. I'm holding the card in my hands with the heatsink still on, how the hell do I get it off?
There is probably a tiny latch on it.
Also you'll need thermal paste.
I have paste available.
I can't find any latches. Taking out all the screws it moves around, but won't completely come off.
tried just pulling it off?

Try and twist it the thermal paste almost suctions it on.

Why do you even need to remove it? If you cant figure out how then that's good sign you shouldn't be attempting it. If you're taking it off just to take a gander at what it looks like underneath you'll be better off just looking online.

If there ACTUALLY was a problem with the fan you could just have turned it in for warranty, but you just broke the warranty.

I didn't have a warranty. I got this card as a replacement for a faulty 4870.
And you tried pulling it?
I'm pretty sure the paste is just what is holding it on.
No, it moves around in a way as if there's something inside the enclosure holding it on. It's not a firm stuck like there would be with thermal paste.

That wouldn't void the warranty for the replacement, would it?
Is it still in the case at this point?
Take it out, there is probably soemthing holding it on that you can not see at this angle.
No, I'm holding it in my hands.
