• Cheap Build

First, this build I want is almost from scratch. My last computer was a laptop, and the only thing I MIGHT be able to salvage is 3 gigs of ram. However I'm not sure anything about this ram. So my first question is what do I need to do to my laptop to find out about this ram, and what do I need to find out? I don't need this computer to play every game on maximum settings, I just want games to run smooth. I'm hoping for around $400-$500. I am in the US. I don't need a mouse, but I pretty much need everything else. Thanks FP.
Save up another $100 or $200 if you can.
Yeah, sorry I don't really know what to base that number off.
You need a monitor, OS, everything..you'll need at least $800.
You won't be able to use your RAM
Oh, I picked up a cheap copy of windows 7 as a college kid, so I won't need that. How much does that subtract?
You'll want a $175 monitor, $50 headset, $25 keyboard. Any computer build today includes 4GB of RAM ($100), and usually a 640GB HDD ($60). From then, here's components in Highest/High/Medium/Low. Mobo: $220/$180/$100/$60 CPU: $300/$160/$100/$60 PSU: $150/$90/$70/$40 GPU: $600/$300/$150/$100 Case: $150/$90/$60/$30
Well, I'm sure I could find a cheaper headset. I also have a 1TB external HDD so I don't need a HUGE internal.
You can find a cheaper headset easier, but trust me; I've gone through 3 headsets in the last year because I bought cheap ones. Then I gave up, bought a $60 (fatil1ty I think) one, and I'm cruising.
You can't use laptop RAM in a desktop. [editline]04:06PM[/editline]
Well, I'm sure I could find a cheaper headset. I also have a 1TB external HDD so I don't need a HUGE internal.
http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=868300
So what is the cheapest price I could get for a mediocre gaming computer? (Minus headphones, a large hard drive, a mouse, and an OS)
$150 1680x1050 Monitor $90 HD4850 $100 Phenom II x3-720 $70 785G/870 MOBO $50 2Gb DDR2/3 $20 Keyboard $25 DVD drive $40 PSU
Urm you can get a nice 1920x1080 Asus monitor for 150$

Now I have a nicer set, and it's been going strong for over a year.
I'm good on headsets, all I need is my case/power supply. I don't know how much my wattage is, and I was hoping for a case and a power supply for around $75. Possible?
Corsair CX 400W -> $30 Antec 300..something like $50?
So how many Watts do I need?
HD4850 ~= 115 Watts Phenom II ~= 130 Watts Everything else ~= 65 Watts.
So I only need like 300 watts? On the HD4850 is says this under requirements
450 Watt or greater power supply with 75 Watt 6-pin PCI Express power connectors recommended (550 Watt and two 6-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX technology in dual mode)
Sorry, I don't know much about this subject.
They overrate their PSUs so some idiot with an 400Watt OEM PSU can't sue them.
http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-CMPSU-400CX-400-Watt-Certified-compatible/dp/B001FXB7X0 Would this be a good one? Seems kinda expensive, and what separates this from a cheaper type on newegg? Like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817338006
The corsair is GREAT. The Athena is a bomb

That's the same resolution as my 13.6" laptop...
So should I get the corsair? Does that work?
YESS. It works fine. Fsk. [irate]
And see this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811144042
That case is $75. Antec 300 is $50. That case has 2x 80mm, antec has 3x 120mm.
