So when I was at school yesterday, I wrote an essay for my English class. I was almost done but didn't have enough time in the period so I emailed it to myself. I got home today and wanted to work on it but after I opened the document, it was in a different language and 72 pages long. I originally wrote it in English and it was 2 pages long. I need to know how to fix this. It is saved as a .docx if that even matters.
Here is a picture of this blasphemy.

Looks like it wasn't encoded right or it got corrupted when sent. There is no way of recovering this unless you have the paper saved at your school. And next time don't use .docx just use .doc.

Some of it was saved.
Some of it might be saved because that's what was properly encoded. If you can, try to resend it from school tomorrow as a .doc or put it on a flash drive for easier transportation. Emails can sometimes screw up and corrupt a perfectly good file.
Well I figured out how to fix it. I had to download OpenOffice.org. Thanks for what little help there was, except for ItWasNiceToKnow.
Blech openoffice. But at least your problem is fixed.
It was saved in DOCX format, a word 2007/2010 XML Format, You're in an older version of word that doesn't work with DOCX files.
Good you downloaded Open office though.
You can open and edit docx files with older versions of Word as well, if you install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats.
