Hey, for a project i've been asked to discuss the social and individual implications of 3g technology. What are your views on 3g, and has it affected you as an individual?
Many thanks,
Deamer44
It hasn't affected me at all.
When I want the internet I'll have a proper internet connection handy, if I don't then I'll do without until I can get one.
Can't live without it, I use the net frequently while on the go from my phone.
I can't imagine the pain of using an EDGE network to watch a video or download an important file.
To sum up, 3G is good shit.
Do you think it has resulted in people being connected to work all the time, so they have an obligation to constantly read emails.
I think that 3g is furthering the use of social networking sites, so people would rather talk on them than in real life. Obviously there can be disagreements and it depends on the person in question.

No I don't think it's resulted in people being permanently plugged-in to work, as it could still happen on any other kind of mobile internet service, such as EDGE, GSM or HSDPA.
Yes, it has furthered the use of social networking, but for me it's only a supplement for conversing with people in real life.
Hope that helps somewhat.
I don't know, we don't have a 3G GSM provider where I live. We barely have GSM service period. And Verizon is pretty damn expensive.
Has hardly affected me.
Doesn't affect me at a-wait facebook notification
You need to tell your teacher that it's not a revolutionary new product..
It's not very fast, far too slow to even access facebook on my blackberry at an acceptable speed.
4G however, I'm really looking forward to.
"linksys" unsecured router
That's all I need when I'm out and about
I don't really use my cellphone's 3G network. It is useful for when I need to Map Quest where the heck I'm going though.
I live off of 3G pretty much. The only time I'm not connected to 3G is when I'm sleeping and even then it's continuously downloading my e-mails. It has for sure changed my life I'd say. Helping me better to be an informed shopper.
I have never owned a 3g device, and never will. It's too slow for me to do anything with, and free wi-fi is everywhere. Not to mention the 54g wi-fi beats the pants off a shitty 3g connection in raw speed. There is a 4G provider in my area called Clear (www.clear.com) and it looks promising.
What's with the comments regarding 3G being slow?
I get a fucking megabit through the fucking air to my phone!

Let's see... a 3g at 1Mb compaired to my 54g Wi-fi that gets 20Mb... hmm...
No real comparison afterall. :smug:

Yeah but it's in a small pocket-sized device that gets service where wifi usually wont, say the car, train, airplane, bus; It's ok for people who are out often and just want to google an article or check email. Maybe even watch a youtube video.
I guess so... to each their own.
3g is progress.. change is good :D

3g is regression. It might seem fast on a gay-ass phone, but on a laptop it sucks ass.

Why would you use 3g on a laptop, unless you absolutely had to?

Uh where there's no free wifi?
There's basically no open wifi networks in Australia, so 3G is the king of internet on the go here.

Then G3 is progress there.
Thanks for all of your responses ! I guess most people think its a large improvement over 2g?

You're assuming everywhere in the world has wifi. I know my area has it, but you have to pay on an hourly basis to use it and it just isn't worth the extra payment for a slightly faster connection.
My 3G connection for my iPhone is around 8mb/s and 2mb/s up.
It's quite unstable though but you can play games on it at least. (I wouldn't want though if not forced)
I use my iPhone to download torrents, browse facebook and such while I am at school.
The speed is okay, I can download around 350 KB/s.
But the ping is horrible, not possible to play any FPS or something.

I've seen that argument before, and I disagree. There are many situations in which I would not actually grab my phone and call someone, or go out and meet them in person, but would still like to keep contact.
If you're like me, there's a whole load of people you enjoy seeing at parties, but you've never went to their house or hanged out with them outside of school/work/parties. Facebook, other social networking sites, and texting, are all excellent ways of keeping contact with those acquaintances.
Never been at all affected by it.
