• What is the point of media streamers?

I've been looking to turn my room into a nice mini home cinema and I came across these media streamers. What exactly do they do and are they any good? I'm talking about things like the Seagate GoFlex TV HD, and the Western Digital TV Live HD. Here is what these things look like: Does anyone know what these things actually do and if they're decent?
Do you own a PS3 or 360?
Get an Apple TV or maybe a Mac mini

They can, but codec support is a bit lacking. That's not say these little "poor man's HTPCs" are any better, They range from down right crap to decent, but the Seagate seems to allow you to play bluray from ISOs, nifty. Personally I'd take an Asrock ION running XBMC over anything.

I use the Western Digital Live TV to stream stuff over my network. Very simple to use. I rip my DVDs using Handbrake into an MKV format and it looks perfect.
