Any console is going to be hard pressed to beat PS2 numbers.
Damn straight. The PStwo was a great system.
155 million units That's how much the PS2 sold.
Damn straight. The PStwo was a great system.
More importantly, it was an incredibly cheap DVD player.
More importantly, it was an incredibly cheap DVD player.
It's crazy to think now you can get a Drive for your PC that reads and writes DVDs for about $20, if that
More importantly, it was an incredibly cheap DVD player.
Wasn't the PS3 also the cheapest Blu-Ray player at the time?
Wasn't the PS3 also the cheapest Blu-Ray player at the time?
Yes, but Blu-Ray was like a 4k TV back then. It looked great, but my DVD player is still doing its job just fine.

I disagree about it not passing PS2 sales. I expect the PS4 to sell more, because honestly if you take into account the fact that in the first 24 hours the PS4 was the biggest console launch of all time and it launched first in just North America, then it should be obvious that in the same life span of the PS2 that it will sale way, way more than the PS2.

Heck, a few years into it's release you could buy one second-hand with pocket change. You don't reach 155 million sales with an expensive console, I severely doubt Sony will be able to get the PS4 down the prices that the PS2 had.

[editline]sd[/editline] Coupled with the fact that there are more gamers than ever invading the market and being introduced through phones tablets and internet games, I think there is a very high chance that the PS4 will sell more than the PS2.
These numbers made me want to see the last generation of consoles sales and led to this: Third Gen Consoles Nintendo Entertainment System: 61.9 million units Sega Master System: 14.8 million units Atari 7800: 3.77 million units Fourth Gen Consoles TurboGrafx-16: 10 million units Sega Genesis: 40 million units SNES: 49 million units Fifth Gen Consoles Atari Jaguar: <250k units 3DO: 2 million units Sega Saturn: 9.5 million units Playstation: 102 million units Nintendo 64: 32 million units Atari drops out of the console market, only selling 0.25% of the number of Playstation units sold, Sony enters the console market with the best selling console of the generation Sixth Gen Consoles Dreamcast: 10 million units Playstation 2: 155 million units Gamecube: 21 million units Xbox: 24 million units Sega drops out of the console market, only selling 6.5% of the number of PS2 units sold, Sony still tops the console market with their console this generation Seventh Gen Consoles Xbox 360: 80 million units PS3: 80 million units Wii: 100 million units Sony loses the the cheaper Nintendo Wii Eighth Gen Consoles Xbox One: 2 million units PS4: 2.1 million units Wii U: 3.9 million units Sony set to win the 8th generation of home consoles with the biggest console launch in history. Also the PS2 outsold the original Nintendo DS by 1.09 million units
The reason the ps2 has such high sales numbers is because Sony did a really big push into developing countries around 2006 while everyone else ignored those regions
These numbers made me want to see the last generation of consoles sales and led to this:
Nintendo has sold more hardware (console + handheld) than Microsoft, Sega, Atari, and Sony combined, but Sony still trumps them in console sales by over 60 million. Microsoft isn't even close to either of them, Nintendo has sold 560 million more units than them, and Sony has sold 317 million more. Though to be fair, Sony and Nintendo have been in the console business a bit longer than Microsoft, and every Xbox version has sold pretty well so far.

Doesn't take an analyst to figure out that Microsoft royally fucked themselves over. Especially when you take into account how some parts of Europe, Sweden in my case since I live here, won't even be seeing the Xbox One until fall 2014. Which gives the PS4 an entire year without competition, unless you count the Wii U which doesn't really cater to the same audience. So the coming year if somebody wants to buy a new console to play the latest action games and whatnot, the PS4 is the only thing available. Whether you like it or not.
