I'm building a PC and I don't plan on buying these parts till the 2nd week of june, Now I know alot of you are going to say "Don't build it now if you aren't going to buy it, prices can fluctuate blah blah blah" I know this, Prices mean nothing to me and if a new GPU gets released in the 600 series I'll probably just swap it for that. I've pretty much got everything together but now I need to decide on what GPU to get... I am almost positive I will be able to get a 580 which would be awesome, but I'm stumped on which one to get. One only has 1.5gb of ram and is $430 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130590 and the other has 3gb of ram and is $490 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130655 Should I get the one with higher Vram or will the lower one do fine? Also I plan to SLI these eventually, if I get the 3gb one could I sli it with a 1.5 GB 580 or would I need to have a 3gb 580? My "budget" is at $1300 - $1500 depending on how many hours my boss decides to give me this summer.
If you plan on SLI-ing there is generally a popular consensus amongst gamers that micro-stuttering may occur. The higher vram (3gb) is definitely more preferable especially with regards to Battlefield 3 as it requires a large quantity of memory for maintaining steady frame rates at higher resolutions and maxed out settings (I'm assuming this is your goal for any upcoming pc game). In terms of new video cards, Nvidia has released its 680 and 690 GTX however you'll find they are incredibly scarce, especially the 690. Tom's hardware is great spot to start when investigating how video cards perform on varying settings for games, applications, etc. I hope you find this informative and wish you the best.
