I've recently began collecting parts for my very first build, and I have a few questions.
1. Is the Intel Core i3 (this one) superior or inferior to the AMD Phenom II X2 (this one)? Or should I get an i5?
2. Will this ASUS motherboard fit any of the above processors? Or do I need a different one?
3. Should I get a cheap fan or a quality one?
4. I can't find a CD drive section on Newegg; are the CD burners similar?
5. Is the GT 240 (the ZOTAC model found here) a good enough card for pretty intensive gaming?
6. Is APEVIA a good PSU manufacturer? I've been looking at this one.
7. Is this case large enough for most things?
8. Is 6 gigabytes of RAM, a 3 Ghz CPU, and the GT 240 sufficent to play ArmA 2 at 60 frames per second? I don't really care about graphics, but at least Normal would be nice.
9. Here's a list of everything I will be ordering (currently, it may change soon):

Is there anything that I forgot, anything I should change, or anything I should remove?
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: Whoops, forgot my price range. Anything from 1,000 to 1,500 would be O.K., but the cheaper the better.
no offense, but that is a pretty bad build, I'll see what i can do

if you plan on overclocking you can toss in an aftermarket cooler

go for that
Thanks, that seems much better. I'll look at that, maybe change some stuff, but I doubt it. Thanks for the help!
Will the quad-core 2.66GHZ do what I want it to, namely ARMA 2? I heard that dual-cores were more efficent, and liked what I had seen of the i3 I had on the first one. Don't some of them also use the intergrated graphics instead of the card?

In my opinion, i3s are overpriced. Go with a Phenom II or the one YumYum posted.
Integrated graphics? Are you serious? Only time it would use integrated graphics is when you set it up incorrectly, like plugging in the monitor to the board instead fo the card. In general, integrated graphics are horrible.
I think you misunderstood. I had misinterpreted some reviews and thought the processor wouldn't accept outside graphics, which is, of course, not true upon further examination.
EDIT: OK, I went with your Phenom II suggestion, and here's my updated build plan. I'd like to know a bit more about the pros and cons of that i5 and the Phenom.

AMD processor is better for gaming computer for your budget, but buy an AMD Phenom II X4 955 (160$), it's much powerful than a Intel Core i5 750 (200$) for cheaper price.
Also the motherboard is less expensive too.
The 955 isnt more powerfull (at least not much) than a i5 750, but if you only do gaming you probaly won't notice that anyway! But the motherboard part is true.
965 is a overclocked version of 955 if you want more power for some dozen of dollars.
Ok, thanks. One more: Is G-skill RAM better than Kingston RAM?
G-Skill RAM is good, but if you still have some money, buy Corsair RAM for the quality.
965 is a overclocked version of 955 if you want more power for some dozen of dollars.
No. The 965 isn't pre-overclocked. It just simply comes standard with a higher clock.
Which isn't really worth it unless you do heavy overclocking.
OP, put the core i5 back in the build. It's lots better than the 555.
Also, G. Skill Ripjaws is perfect. You don't need Corsair.

As you can see the i5 750 is better in most areas.

Yeah G-Skill RAM is still good.
But no, the 955 (or 965) is really worth it for a gaming computer. Look at your graphics. Except for Far Cry 2 where we can agreed (which it is totally stupid because games use graphic card actually), there are no more differences with the i5 750.

Just in case you didn't see that the first time.
The core i5 750 is better in general.
This is mainly just a contradiction to what you said earlier.

i5 750 > 955.
I'm kinda confused about the CPU, and I may go with the Phenom. But what about the GPU? Is it sufficient for pretty high-FPS gaming on modern games?

Lol, the 5850 is currently the fastest single GPU on the market.
[editline]11:07PM[/editline]
And get the core i5 750.
I'm kinda confused about the CPU, and I may go with the Phenom. But what about the GPU? Is it sufficient for pretty high-FPS gaming on modern games?
Go with the Intel i5 750. It is superior to the Phenoms overall.
Also the 5850 is pretty much one of the best GPUs you can buy for your money right now. It can tackle just about any game maxed out.

:mmmhmm:
@Ghostofme, the 5870 is fastest single gpu :|
Also. LGA 1156 is pretty much a DOA socket. It will never get anything past a quad core. If you're gonna go LGA 1366. Another option is to get a Phenom II X4 955 and a Corsair H50 and OC it to 4 GHz+

The corsair h50 is not all that great. It is beat by many aircoolers. if you are going water cooling but all the parts sepratley. Because then you can get the quality parts.

Dang it. Brain fart right there.
So, even though the i5 has a slower speed, I should go with it? I'm still confused about this, since I don't see much difference except for the speed.

It is architecture just get the i5.

Ok, i5 it is. Here is my fourth revision build:

No need for the triple channel dual channel is what you need.
Ok, lemme fix that.
Wait, I can't find any dual-channel 6GB RAM from G.Skill, what's another manufacturer I should try.
you dont need 6GB of ram, how much is that build
With i5s you would actually lose performance with 6 GB over 4 GB.
