I'm having an argument, with my sibling saying that "20 tabs on, with Teamspeak 3" is killing his Youtube to shit. My network monitor never spikes beyond 20 kb/sec when just in Teamspeak 3 and browsing firefox, with said 20 tabs, with 2-3 being actively loaded.
He also says Counter Strike Source is killing his Youtube loading, and that my network monitor is wrong when it tells me that my Gigabit ethernet is never using up more then 30 kb/sec download, and 10 kb/sec upload.
He tells me that when my computer is off from 11PM-2AM, he can load things without lag. It's currently 7:18 PM.
We share a 3 mbps ADSL line from ATT. Who's wrong, who's right?
He is right. Too many active tabs will reduce your internet speed. Also reduce your upload rate in Source games when he is also using the internet.
Youtube is a piece of shit. Its speeds are always slow.
The amount of tabs you have open won't reflect anything as when you have a tab open it isn't loading anything unless you have 20 new tabs instantly all loading a web page.
Too nerdy for me.

This. I'll have nothing but youtube running and it loads like shit
Counterstrike barely uses bandwith it just needs speed.
999999 tabs won't affect your internet speed. Unless some of them are loading or are running some flah/java that is dl'ing.
Also youtube is slow, to many 12 year olds being dumb and 45+ year olds looking for jb.
Google wasn't expecting such a large demand for half naked little girls.
Your sibling has no idea how the internet works than.
He's putting blame on Youtube being slow in the wrong place. Its being slow for EVERYONE. It really sucks when you wait a half an hour for a 5 minute clip to buffer at low quality.
Being in a source game and being on youtube at the same time will decrease speed. Whenever my family is on facebook or youtube my speeds go down the shitter.
3mb/s is only 375KB/s. I have 10mb/s and youtube is very picky about loading shit fast. Featured videos always load fast, obscure ones take forever.
youtube is always slow during peak times
[editline]05:30AM[/editline]
because.. they cap it?
No dude, get some better internet. It's worthless.
To be fair, TS3 does take a lot of bandwidth, not enough to fuck with youtube though
TS3 does not use much bandwidth at all, unless you live somewhere where ALL the internet speeds are shit, like in the UK.
I pay for 20MB down, 5MB up for $40 a month. I usually get 28MB down, and 7MB up.
Lesson of this post:
You get what you pay for. If you over-pay for shit-speeds, you deserve them.
Featured videos always load fast, obscure ones take forever.
Featured videos are kept in youtube's CDN which is in more than one place, while other videos are kept on normal servers.

Unless those shit speeds are the highest speeds available.
$46CAD/Mo for 1.4Mb/0.45Mb
Maybe your router has some kind of quality of service regime. I used to have one that by default would allocate a certain amount of bandwidth to every user - Which meant everyone got a portion, but never the whole. Which sucked because I have lots of devices connected but I'm not usually doing anything with them. Took me a while to figure this one out and it was a huge facepalm when I did.

Yeah same here. :saddowns:
I pay $25 bucks a month for 3.5Mb download.
Tell your brother to stop playing WoW.

Bit of an ignorant statement. Some people simply can't get faster (e.g me with 512KBps)

I download at the maximum of 150 kilobytes per second. But I pay 25 bucks to AT&T every month. :/

I have 230 KB/s (2 MB Cable) and I can almost play HD if I let it buffer for a few seconds, 480p is never slow for me. I'm gussing it's a regional thing.

Ignorant.
My friend cannot get broadband since he lives in the middle of no where. He can't get fixed wireless, our cable company is apparently 1 KM out of reach, his phone company's DSL doesn't serve his area and satellite internet is about the same as netspectrum's pricing, though much slower and has 200 MB a day caps. Does he deserve paying for dialup? Nope. He can't change to anything else.
Tell your brother to stop playing WoW.
Never takes more than 750k of bandwidth for me :colbert:
He's not right. Youtube is slow. /thread.
I can't really watch a YouTube video without waiting for it to buffer for ages :(
Blame BT, for some reason I am not deserving of being switched over to the fibre cabinet right next to my standard telephone cabinet.
Youtube speeds sucks anyway
Source games will hardly use up anything. (around 15kbps which is nothing compared to the speeds you have)
Also browsing the internet uses up hardly anything aswell.
The amount of tabs you have open won't reflect anything as when you have a tab open it isn't loading anything unless you have 20 new tabs instantly all loading a web page.
It isn't uncommon for javascript (or flash or java or whatever) to make requests after the page has loaded. Depending on the circumstances, 20 tabs could be using a significant portion of his bandwidth.

Am I only one that doesn't get that?
