I'm a sophomore in college and I wasn't expecting to study abroad this coming summer, however my parents have insisted I find somewhere I'd like to study. Ideally I'd like to study abroad in Spain, because I did so before in high school and am proficient in Spanish (and would learn a great deal as I did before). However there are no study abroad programs in Spain towards my major at my particular University. If I were to do so I would likely take free electives and humanities. Both of which I've either already finished or will finish this coming semester. Essentially, it would be quite a waste.
I ended up signing up for a 2 1/2 week trip to Medellin, Colombia, however I have not payed the deposit (which was max due 2-3 days ago. I had even emailed the program director inquiring about payment methods) and have essentially already told my parents I was no longer interested in it. Everyone I talk to about the trip is quick to mention how Colombia is dangerous and how it may not be a safe trip. That I'm not sure about. The trip itself would cover my requirement for study abroad (which I don't even need in the first place due to my university Spanish credits) and give me credit towards my major. All in all, I felt quite rushed into making a decision because I had not been expecting to study abroad this summer and the deadlines were already upon me. Regardless however, this would be the only Spanish speaking and affordable option that would credit towards my major. Also, I can get an easy scholarship for the trip if I apply before the 15th.
Anyway, I had an email fully composed to the program director letting him know I'd be leaving the study abroad waiting in my outbox. But now I'm second guessing myself. Should I just pay the deposit, re-inform my parents after having essentially turned it down and go on the trip, or wait for another opportunity for a different study abroad during another semester? (I likely still won't get Spain) I feel like I just need to clear my head about this and get some different opinions on my situation.
I'd love to. However I feel like I've jumped back and fourth so quickly between it already. I could likely just email the director and tell him I'll submit the deposit late and that'd be that. I'd apply for the scholarship and I'd be good for this summer.
The thing is, completely backing out and re-engaging is almost equally as easy. I've also been reading plenty of good things about the city from people who have lived and traveled there.
My dad just went on a trip to Medellin a couple months ago. He said it used to be a shit hole, but as of lately its really turned into itself into an absolutely beautiful city with a lot of rich colombian culture.
