• What to buy for Rock Band/Guitar Hero?

I really love Rock Band/Guitar Hero type games, but unfortunately I don't own any consoles and the selection of those games is pretty limited on PC. Which console/games should I buy to get the best experience? Age isn't an issue, so if the best games were all for PS2 then I'll get a PS2 as my dedicated pretend music gaming system.
Even though the PC had limited games, you can add custom songs to GH World Tour with ease. You are also able to do it with the Wii version but it requires a lot more effort.
If you're also interested in learning to play guitar, maybe look into rocksmith.

With Guitar Hero 1 and Rock the 80's being unavailible for the Xbox, every major Guitar Hero that's been released is availiable for that system. As of 2015, Activision lost the song licenses so the DLC for the games aren't there anymore which is kinda sad. You can always turn to Rock Band if you're interested in expanding your song collection as they keep their song store updated. The line-up for the Xbox 360 is: Guitar Hero II Guitar Hero III Guitar Hero: Aerosmith Guitar Hero: World Tour Guitar Hero: Metallica Guitar Hero: Smash Hits Guitar Hero 5 and Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. Rock Band 1, 2, LEGO, Beatles, 3 & Blitz.

Free to use and there's community songs that should still work. I used it before with a PS2 guitar controller since it's just a USB controller, and it worked perfectly fine.
Yeah, I've tried FoF and similar, but I found them all a little rough around the edges. Not as easy to setup, can be a little buggy, visuals aren't as nice. An Xbox 360 is looking like my best bet so far.
xbox 360 + rock band 3 is pretty much the way to go imo it's the most complete and featured rb/gh-style rhythm game ever released, and the 360 version lets you do custom songs which is neat
Definitely a 360 and Rock Band 3. You can import hundreds of custom songs as well as get the 3k or so song library for the game. Plus it supports keyboard which no other game has (not even the newest Rock Band game, RB4, has it). If you buy the GH games, you can also find unofficial exports to get the songs into Rock Band 3 (because buying the games is the only way to keep this legal) as well as an unofficial export of The Beatles Rock Band for Rock Band 3.
