I'm pretty sure the Commander mode was in Battlefield 2142 aswell.
As excited as I am to see Commander mode return and BF4 in general, I'm dreading actually playing the game with commanders because I know mine is going to be constantly bad :v:

They never talk about 2142 and it makes me sad. That's the one Battlefield game I wish I could have played, and it's never even so much as lightly mentioned. :(

Was and still is my favorite of the series.
Seems a bit cheap that if you get 6 kills everyone knows where you are.
Surely with that commander screen, a more reasonable way would be for it not to show the players location but the commander could work it out for himself and 'highlight' an area in which the undisclosed HVT player could be.

Highlighting the player for the commander wouldn't exactly cause a problem, the commander would then have to actually communicate the exact position. Highlighting a rough area for the player on nearby players radars without saying exactly who or where the player is could work as well though to attract people to the area if the commander is shit.
punish players for being good okie
punish players for being good okie
Rather that than give something as goddamn idiotic as KILLSTREAK bonuses for being good.
Besides, it's sort of what you should be doing to get the match balanced.
punish players for being good okie
Hardly a punishment if that player gets more points for murdering while HVT. Plus it won't highlight people who are actually being useful to the team by capturing objectives and performing team actions, just the guys who are killing a lot (and likely not doing their jobs going by BF players of olde).
punish players for being good okie
The HVT gets more points for being the HVT and people around the HVT get points for kills around him. Hardly a punishment.
I look forward to the commander seat being a balanced addition that every player can make use of and have fun with and in no way being occupied by the same rank 100 Colonel who has paid more money than the rest of the server every match.
I may actually want to get into Battlefield again now.
I mean, yeah, it might be abused and whatnot, but I suppose finding good clans/servers will help mitigate that. I just need to check if BF4 has dedicated servers.

It does. Likely rented only servers from approved hosts mind, but they are still dedicated. This is probably down to BattleLog integration.
I hope battlelog works with Origin's ingame browser this time. I want to join servers while I'm in other servers.
I mean they forced you to use Origin, might as well actually make use of it.

The browser isn't Origin, so they made use of Origin any way through cloud functionality and shit. BattleLog requires a plugin to interact with the Origin client and game, how can it interact with the game while another instance is already interacting with the running game?
Just alt-tab out and close BF3/4. It takes no time to alt-tab from and close.
I know how alt-tabbing works, I'd just like it if you could join a server and it would quit the game and join the server for you.
It'd be kinda nice to be able to stay in your current server and play while waiting in the queue to join a friend's server.

That could be quite helpful to have, though I expect you'd still have to use an actual web browser thanks to the plugin :v:
I don't really like the idea of "Commander versus Commander" gameplay. The best part of the commander role was the satisfaction gained from properly utilizing and prioritizing assets to ensure you support the team in the most efficient way, where good performance was always a win-win situation. I can only see having to worry about the abilities of the enemy commander being a distraction. EMP strikes sounds more like a simple "Fuck You"-button (to be used whenever and wherever enemy UAV appears) rather than an asset with tactical implications, unless they plan on letting commanders throw up more than one UAV simultaneously. And a situation where you have to rely solely on common players to defend and fix your assets sounds like a special circle in hell to me.
I don't think commander gameplay was a formula that needed any improvement, I hope they prove me wrong on that.
Well, 2142 had EMP, not sure if it worked on UAVs though.
And you always had to rely on players to maintain equipment in your base in BF2/2142
I wonder if there'll actually be in-game VoIP this time around. Seems like having the commander back kind of justifies it, since it's pretty useful to be able to communicate directly with squad leads.
I can't wait to have an Assault party with my friends and stroke my e-penis while the enemy team rushes toward their M16 deaths

Well you COULD rely on players, but you always had the option (and frequently had to resort to) picking up the engineer kit so you could lay a minefield near the home base and wrench the artillery back up. Nothing would be more frustrating than having your resources being repeatedly denied by a commander who takes the "Comm Versus" concept literally and spends the entire round messing up your supporting efforts while neglecting his own, resulting in nobody having fun. Sort of like when the commander repeatedly targets the enemy commander with artillery strikes instead of the enemy squads. That sort of thing should be up to a joint effort between the commander and determined players.
