so we have 4 laptops, all wireless through a router and i wanna limit the bandwidth that my sister is using. she is using webcam on skype in belgium with friends in america and that is EATING bandwidth!!!!! i asked her many times to stop but she continues to do it.
so i have a linksys wrt54g wireless router.
i have tried to configure the QoS settings.
I have added her laptop's MAC address but what does the priority mean? Low/Med/High/Highest?
I have tested if the QoS works on my own laptop using my own MAC address. And i changed the "Upstream Bandwidth" to "20 Kbps" (whats the usual/avarage Kbps?)
Normally youtube videos load in less than 20 seconds. With the QoS setting they take maybe 20 minutes.
I ran a speedtest on www.speedtest.net with the "20 Kbps setting" and it won't even reach 0.10 Mbps. When I disable the settings, I get almost 18 Mbps!!!! So the QoS is working. BUT, will she be able to use skype with the webcam when i change the upstream bandwith to "20 Kbps? Maybe with stuttering? Or will she still have fluent webcam streaming?
btw, is the mac address always the same? because i have put in my mac address to test it but does that mac address ever chance? so i won't have to change it every day...
Mac Address is the same yes, and 20 kbps for your sister? That's brutal...

yes im still trying to figure out what the best Kbps is just to surf. i have to do this because i cant sleept at night  and i have a life
1024.
1024.
when i set it to 1000 Kbps and run the speedtest I get 13 Mbps. Thats still too much, she can still use skype
Try about 200-350 Kbps. That should be too little to use Skype. Or you could ratchet it down to 100, if you really want to make sure.
Do yourself a favor and put Tomato on it, should make things much better. http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato
Tried some settings:
Set it to 32 Kbps, speedtest run = 0,55 Mbps
Set it to 250 Kbps, speedtest run = 15,62 Mbps
Disabled QoS (no options), speedtest run = 19,11 Mbps
So 250 Kbps and disabling QoS makes almost no difference...

IIRC QoS does not limit your speeds when noone else is using it, it just makes sure the other traffic goes first.

ok i installed it
so is the problem monthly caps or just you lagging when she does it
monthly caps. 50GB a month. that's not much when there's 4 people using internet here..
i installed the tomato firmware and its pretty good. i can now see the real time bandwidth and started a webcam sessions on msn. bandwidth went up 3MB in 5 seconds!

dang, i literally used 40GB in a day, that's awful.
yes.
i tried to block skype via "access restrictions", doesnt work apparently. i blocked all IPP2P thingies, doesnt work :S
Does that version of tomato have a way to monitor bandwidth usage per IP/MAC? Just let her use Skype, though if you go over your monthly bandwidth, make her pay for her usage/
Uninstall her webcam drivers.
I guess you could go for the extreme option of uninstalling Skype on her computer and stopping her installing it again.
Install an obscure Linux distro on her laptop, if she can figure it out to the point of having a webcam and wireless drivers working, she can probably circumvent the bandwidth limits and control satellites.
Good luck.

no
If she's not listening just give her a really low bandwidth, or lock her off the router entirely, if she's getting you close to the limit and she's not listening who cares?

she will install it again
block skype ports?
Setup the router to use OpenDNS as your dns service provider.
Make a account on the OpenDNS site.
Install their software so they know which external Ip address your network has.
Under your accounts settings tab, open your networks tab.
Under "Manage individual domains" set the addresses mentioned here: https://secure.dslreports.com/forum/r26147342- as always block.
Apply settings.
Done.
Confusing I know, but I'm my experience this should work.
nvm
