hey guys, it's been about two years since i've done a major update on my computer. recently i got a 6970 for $150 which is great compared to my 4870. but now i've realized that some other aspects of my computer are a bit outdated. Right now I have: Core i7 950 @ 3.06GHz 6GB 1600MHz DDR3 (3x2GB) MSI Pro-E 1366 motherboard ATI Radeon 6970 1GB Intel 60GB SSD WD Green 500GB OCZ ModXStream 650W all in an antec 300. So I'm at the point where I think with selling some of this and my income, I can afford to do a nice upgrade. This is what i'm thinking of upgrading to, Intel Core i7-4770 Haswell 3.4GHz LGA 1150 ASUS SABERTOOTH Z87 LGA 1150 Intel Z87 Mushkin Enhanced Redline 16GB (2 x 8GB) 1600MHz CORSAIR HX Series HX850 850W I think that looks good. I'd definitely like a case also, and it's so hard to decide. I love the corsair cases, but I've read that the 800D is kinda for water cooling and not heat transfer. I like my antec 300, but I'd like some more space for cable management, etc.. I like that corsair carbide air 540. But I can't decide on that case since there's other options. And if it is possible, I'd love to have a motherboard that has a fast boot cycle. Right now, even with fastboot on and my SSD as primary, it takes about 20 seconds
If you don't do rendering / encoding then get i5-4670k. i7 does not give any gains in form of gaming.
The processor you've selected isn't overclockable, and like killervalon said you're much better off getting an i5 if you don't do rendering-related tasks. The motherboard is crazy expensive and you're not going to need it's features, the MSI G45-gaming is 70$~ cheaper and better than it. I've never heard of that RAM manufacturer Why do you need a 850W PSU? A corsair CX600M is high enough to give the best efficiency at your system wattage unless you're planning on running CFX in the future(which i would severely recommend not doing, as many games run slower in CFX than with a single card due to the way AMD has designed it) You should look into using the money saved on a 250GB samsung 840 EVO or the like, as a 60GB intel SSD is very slow by SSD standards. If storage is a concern, you should look into a 1TB WD blue drive. When it comes to the case, the ones i'd recommend you are the 200R(for a cheaper case) or a 550D(for a high-end case), both made by corsair.
The boot time is not due to the motherboard: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/18AEG You need a faster SSD if you want better boot times. The 840 Pro is the most recommended for speed, but I'm sure you can find a faster, more expensive one. I see no reason to upgrade the RAM or the PSU. The PSU is 650W which is much more than enough to handle all of this. The RAM seems fine, and you will never use more than 8 anyway (most likely you won't use more than 6 either).
