Well, I'm going to buy a new set of peripherals and need your opinion. I'm getting a Steelseries QcK heavy mousemat, but I'm not sure what to buy with it. I've been looking at either a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0, which I've heard is good for both gaming and everyday use. I play a lot of Starcraft 2 and CS, so I want a mouse that is good for both, preferably between £20-£50. Previously owned a Razer copperhead but it felt unpolished compared to my friends' mice (Steelseries Xai, Logitech MX518) and it broke.
For a keyboard I'm looking at either the Cherry G80 for around £50 or a Steelseries 7G, although I don't know if the 7G is worth £40 over the G80 just for USB 1.0 ports and audio i/o.
Any opinions?

Steelseries is overpriced gimmicky crap.
Logitech for mice, mx518 is godlike if you're on a budget.
I have an MX518 and can confirm it's awesome.

By the way chipset, your avatar is ugly, making it transparent, hang on...
In my opinion mechanical key switches are worth the extra money but don't buy that stupid "gaming mechanical" bull shit if you want a real one go for a Model M or any Cherry (One of my friends has Das keyboard an likes it very much)
I personally love the Model M that I am using at the moment

Here's one that's just transparent.

Here's one with a soft drop shadow, because I thought it'd look cool.

Wait, I messed up the drop shadow. Hang on again...

Fixed.

The 7G and 6Gv2 are not gimmicky at all. They are just well made black cherry mechanical keyboards.
I would recommend getting a Cherry G80 over them though, if you can get one with brown switches or cherry clears. Blues are also nice, but you should try them before buying. They are surprisingly loud.
The Xai is very good, I got it for Christmas, best mouse I've had.
G500 is awesome, get it or the MX518.
IE3 is fine but the MX518 is a more popular choice.
The heavy is a fantastic pad as is the newer NP+ which is a little more tightly knit so it works with newer laser mice and is water repellent. If you go with the xai the np+ is a must have. The xai will occasionally skip and have trouble on the older qck pads (especially after more use).
The IME 3.0 is a good choice for a mouse. I'd recommend you stick with that or get an MX518, just pick the one that's most comfortable for your hand.

There's no such thing as "gaming mechanical", unless you're talking about the Cherry keyswitches that work best for gaming (I think those are the MX Blacks). The Razer Blackwidow, which is marketed as a gaming keyboard, uses Cherry MX Blue keyswitches. They're excellent for typing and since the keyboard is made by Razer, they're quite easy to track down for around $80.
If you've had bad experiences with Razer (Like me with my dead Deathadder), you'll be interested to know that (Apparently) the keyboard is an OEM by IONE. Razer just slapped their illuminated logo, font, casing and braided cable on it.

No I am not saying there are not cherry or ALPS switches in the gaming keyboard what I am saying is you can get a keyboard that has those switches without paying for the "Gaming" part
You really really don't need to spend more than $50 on a mouse, and that's if you have a really huge budget.
That said, look for Logitechs like the MX518.
Fixed
While it's been said that the mx518 is good and all, I personally can vouch for the G500.
It's got three side buttons which, contrary to what you might think from pictures, are not at all akward to use. Neatest of all though I think is that it has a button just in front of the scroll wheel that when pressed, makes the scroll wheel frictionless. It might seem like a minor feature but I seriously could not live without it now that I've used it.
As for the price, the G500 is on the very upper limit of what I'd pay for a mouse but it's not that much of a stretch from an MX518 and i don't think you'd be disappointed.
I got a G500 after my G5 cable ripped ( Magic, that cable was tough ). Just as nice as my G5, but better. :D I love it.

Optical > Laser
Optical > Laser
Not nessesarily. Laser mouses have a much higher DPI sensitivity.
Alright I've decided on a Cherry G80, a G500 and a QcK Heavy for £100 total roughly. How Does the G500 compare to the MX518 in terms of size and smoothness? I've used a MX518 before at a lan and liked it alot.
Not to make a new thread, I also want to spraypaint my HD555s black. What type of paint is best for electronics? Might also paint the G500 if i get it, I don't like the silly art on it (much like the mx518 which looked like it had been crushed by a car)
It's the same shape with a laser sensor. You should really go with the np+ if you're going the laser route, the looser fibers on the qck series will wreak havoc on the g500.
If it were me I'd save some cash and get the 518 though. I don't really see any reason to upgrade especially because the optical sensor has 0 acceleration and is really smooth. I can't speak to the g500's because although it shares the same sensor as my xai, I haven't used it enough to tell you. All I know is that its tracking on my qck is very on/off with the xai which is a common complaint and the basis of why they developed the np+
Any alternatives to the np+? They're not on amazon UK and I really don't want to order from some random seller. A damn PSU took a month to arrive just to save some cash.

My friend recommends a 9HD although I don't want to pay more for a mouse mat than the mouse.
