They're both right around the same price. Which is better for performance? I currently have a 9600GT, but I need to upgrade, it's running games pretty slowly now... Thanks for the help.
The 5870, it beats the GTX 295 in most games, and that's with the beta drivers. The 5XXX series has Eyeinfinity/DX11. The only reason I see to buy an Nvidia card if your going to use Linux with 3D applications.

Just one example.

That is not a major reason either. It takes some work, but once you get them running, ATi cards work flawlessly under Linux. It is easier with nVidia.

Not to mention this is with the first batch of drivers, expect the performance to improve.
I got a 4334 Graphics score with 3DMark Vantage.
Pretty horrible. Around 8 FPS average, in the tests. So is the 5870 worth the money, and how much will it improve my fps in games?
5870 is about 4 times the 9600Gt if not more
I'll run a 3DMark Vantage test for you right now.
what are the rest of your specs.
AMD Phenom 9550 Quad-Core Processor ~2.2GHz
4GB RAM
Windows 7 32-bit (Yes, I know)
nVidia GeForce 9600 GT

You might want to go with a 5850 and get a better cpu like maybe a phenom 2 955.
Also, if I get a new video card I will probably need a new PSU, I think I have a 480-520 watt PSU right now. Correct?

Matters what brand.
Mhm trial period is over, I can't get the results. I averaged around 40fps though.
Matters what brand.
Can't tell. Big Black Box. Also if it helps I got this desktop from [sp]Alienware[/sp] about a year ago.

surely there must be a logo, website, or S/N on the psu
surely there must be a logo, website, or S/N on the psu
Nothing...I checked, pure black box...
weird, all psu's should have amps, wattage, S/N, and brand on.
Fucking dell :argh:
Well I would upgrade as a precaution just look for a decent power supply either coolermaster, antec, ocz, pc power and cooling, or maybe corsair. Any 500 watt one should do.

I'm gonna guess you want newegg, seeing as it's 3:12AM over here in England.
[editline]03:13AM[/editline]
be careful though because although it might look like atx, a new PSU might fry your prop. dell mobo.
also it may use custom psu mounting brackets like most dell shit
God damnit. Why was I forced to get an Alienware?
Really wish I could of built it... I really hope it doesn't have custom mounting brackets, or anything...I also found it on the very top in a corner, it had a serial, and 700 Watt, and 750 Watt Max on it. Along with some other amperage stuff.
What's the S/N?
What do you mean, "forced to get an Alienware"?
Instead of sending the money to dell, you send it to ebuyer or newegg :v:

what a cunt..
you'd get a build that's better for gaming, upgrading, and cost
[editline]03:28AM[/editline]
..if you built your own

Well parent sometimes... :downs: I think that explains it all.
but yeah, OP, dell/alienware are fucking impossible to upgrade
i've even heard of CPU hsf's being glued to the mobo in some of the dells
