I hate how they make the image so much smaller. I guess it could be to emphasize the lower resolution of the "SD" Vita version, but it just makes it harder to tell the difference when I can't see anything.
Aveliene looks really blocky in the HD images.
Hate to say it but for me the SD version looks miles better. All it needed was a simple upscale job and Maybe improve character models. It seems like they've changed every texture in the process including the UVs and it creates some rather bizarre looking textures. (The wooden pillars in the first image spring to mind)
Maybe that's just me, though.

And if they hadn't done that people would complain that they were lazy
Does this game do anything to make the AC formula more interesting like AC4 does?

This one was made pretty much alongside AC3 so no not really.

Its not as good as AC4, but it sure is a hell of a lot better than AC3.
And is it me or does the Vita version seem to have better lighting? I cant tell from the screenshots, because of how small the vitas ones are.
I think it's just more bloom, which I definitely won't miss.
I like the look of the swamps a lot more in the SD version. They feel swampier.
Everything else is a nice improvement.

Textures made for a handheld with even less VRAM than the PS3 and mobile hardware is not going to have textures that will hold up well at an HD resolution.
I don't really care for whatever filter they're using in some of these. Like, other than textures, most of the SD pictures look better to me. All the bloom and weird lighting in some of the HD pictures make it look cartoony.
The first screenshot looks like borderlands
