If your Desktop has 2 Ethernet ports, yes. If not, no.

A router with only 1 ethernet port? If you have two cables, just hook them up separately?

I haven't seen to many computers with an Ethernet in and out, but if it does, you can.
You should really check if there is another ethernet port on your router though, if it doesn't have one, you should really get a new one.
Why not buy an ethernet splitter or set up wifi on your laptop?

If either the desktop or the laptop has a gigabit network card, then he won't need a crossover.
