In celebration of the 10th anniversary, Apple are upgrading their stores! I quickly dropped in to one at a local mall, and it was quite nice. The new layout displays an iPad next to every product with information about the product.

Engadget describes the upgrade.
Again, none of this is earth-shattering stuff, but the so-called Smart Sign system is an interesting way of presenting product information. The system basically replaces the paper cards that have been in place, in theory simplifying the process of deploying products around the store and enabling employees to push new prices to iPad 2s locked in Lucite and running some custom software. Unsurprisingly these tablets don't do anything when you press the Home button, so there's no way to escape the retail tedium, and overall the whole system is surprisingly messy. Wires are running everywhere, twist-tied in place, and it just doesn't feel very... well, it doesn't feel very Apple. But, if you want to read all about the specs of an iPad 2 you can now do it on an iPad 2 -- but you still can't walk in and take one home.
Seems utterly pointless to me. "Let's advertise or cheapest product by using our most expensive product for the sole purpose of advertising our cheapest product!"
Hurr durr

Hurr durr
The iPad is far off Apple's most expensive product.
That looks pretty dumb.
I wish Apple stores were more plentiful in numbers. Only like 3 in my state. Surprised to see one in Syracuse, but it is in a mall.
It doesnt even look nice, I Would rather a 50" LCD display built into the table, that would be far cooler.
Also, nice job having cables everywhere.
Alot of the shit apple does is pretty cool actually. I just don't like their fanbase or their ad campaigns.
"ITS THE MAGICAL AND REVOLUTIONARY IPAD"
I think it's really cool. Aside from the obvious sanitary drawbacks. And the cost.
That's pretty cool. Never thought of using iPads as signs, now have you?

and their prices.

Digital displays have existed for years before this. They are just slightly expensive to run so you don't see them all the time. The only advantage this has is a touch screen, which I would rather not touch after all the neckbeards have had their way with it.
Something tells me the paper was a lot more cost effective. For obvious reasons.
Last time I checked the iPad 2 was still backordered by 1 to 2 weeks...
Nice one Apple!
I love how everyone hates on Apple solely because it's Apple. If Microsoft was advertising similarly with the Courier back when it wasn't dead, people here would be jizzing.
I enjoy going into the apple store and browsing.
Buying stuff sucks though.

I love Apple products, I just think using an iPad in place of the paper is significantly less cost-effective, less sanitary and looks a lot more unprofessional. That said it's a cool way of showing information dynamically, but it just doesn't look like it's all that smart.
Wonder if it has any effect on iPad sales though?

It looks like crap, deal with it. And the only reason I would jizz over that, is that the courier then would actually exist.

Except Microsoft would make some kind of effort to make the display look nice. This heap of shit is just slammed onto a desk with untidy cables everywhere. I thought Apple didn't like cables allover the place.

There's around 300 Apple Stores worldwide. If each store got 20 iPads, that's only 6000 out of the what, couple hundred thousand that stores have in stock?

You say that like Microsoft is known for their tidy presentation of things.
Acutally the apple store in the westchester mall has all the wires tidy under neath the ipad's. That store might have still been working on transitioning or maybe all the stores arn't required to do it neatly (Though they should cause it look'd awesome)
Does Microsoft even make MS branded computers anymore, or are they just a software/console giant now?
Does Microsoft even make MS branded computers anymore, or are they just a software/console giant now?
Software/console giant, and did they ever?
Software/console giant, and did they ever?
I thought they might have, but after doing some research maybe not. Oh well.
I hope they don't/didn't, that'd be almost as bad as Mac Books.
So they've replaced the normal paper with a more expensive paper and added cables everywhere. Cool.

If they can why shouldn't they? And as stated above the cabling shown was a WIP.
When I went to the apple store they had these, it was handy as it listed all the prices/information in one place and had a button that would summon one of the apple guys over to ask anymore questions/buy the product instead of trying to find one if the store is busy.
Edit:
And there was no wires to be seen
