• E8400 build or Phenom II 550

So in my next build I'm looking to go dual core because of gaming performance. I was wondering if there was an advantage between either the E8400 or the Phenom II 550. If I go with the E8400 I'll be getting this motherboard, and if I go with the 550 I'll be getting this motherboard. I'm assuming that these are both the equivalent of each other? Also, are there any recommendations for better motherboards for the same price? Thanks.
If you can afford the E8400 get a 945
Get the PII 720. It is basically tied/beats the E8400 and costs less AND you get an extra core! yay! 550 gets beaten by the E8400 but not by a huge difference. So the price:performance ration is great.
Never been a fan of the idea of a tri-core. Are they really worth getting?
There's nothing wrong with tricores.
It's just another core.
and some can be [editline]10:40PM[/editline] WHATS THE WORD
Waste the money on the 8400, or get the 945 quad and get extra power.
Core i5.
..and some can be unlocked [editline]02:38AM[/editline] to a quad core [editline]02:38AM[/editline] or triple core
Emphasis on sometimes.
Core i5.
Can you read? E8400 costs $167 and the i5 costs $210. Let's not try to pull CPU's out of our asses that we know the OP won't buy if he can't afford it.

You must've never had a tight budget before.
if you said that about everything in a build, you would go severely overbudget.
May i ask,at what point would the E8400 be worth getting?
Why the hell would you get a tri core. A tri core is a quad core with one core shut down.
Because its cheaper, The shut down core is usually broken, its a great in between for duals and quads, the best of both worlds.
Because its cheaper, The shut down core is usually broken, its a great in between for duals and quads, the best of both worlds.
So basically you would be buying a cpu with a broken core and a higher chance of breaking down before a Dual core or a quad core?
Your getting the wrong end of the stick, just because one core didn't pass the quality test, doesn't mean the whole thing will break, because that passed the quality test.
Not to mention that the X3 720BE overclocks like a fucking beast.
And that.

I'm really pushing it here.

The tri-core has 3 WORKING CORES. The other one is disabled. It's not guaranteed it will work or not. The 550 has 2 disabled cores. Your computer will run fine with the cores you start with.
tri cores are either built with one core that had laser etching problems, or it is disabled.

Doesn't that sound sketchy to you? Also i didn't claim it was a broken core the guy above me did.

It certainly sounds to me like you don't.
They lock off cores that didn't pass quality control, and make that whole chip into a tri/dual, people seem to have an allergy to odd numbers.
op get the PII 720
