Didnt Rock Band do that anyways? And Rocksmith lets you play any six string with electric components. Why do we care about this now?

Probably to stay competitively relevant. After all, once Rock Band became a hit, Guitar Hero emulated it right back with World Tour doing the band shit too, and never went back to the one-guitar kind of thing. Which is kind of sad, as I would've preferred Rock Band being the party experience that is generally more 'easier' to a degree, and Guitar Hero as the solo or duel guitar-shredding thing.
If they focused more on DLC rather than yearly releases, they wouldn't be in that situation in the first place, look at Rock Band
