I just found a sale for the Intel i7 930 for $200 at my local computer store. It's $20 more expensive than the 965, but I hear it's def worth it. Regularly it's like $300.
The problem is, I have to get a triple boot RAM for it (or so I hear), so that will cost more.
Is it worth all the extra costs to get the 930?
I will have either a 5850 or a GTX 470 hooked up to it, to give you guys an idea for what will be running with it. Later, maybe 2 years later, I might get a second GPU (depends if it's a 5850 or a 470, I'll get the same).
The 965 is a delightful chip, especially for overclocking.
I've been a bit hesitant to buy intel ever since they had some quality problems with their early 45nm dual cores
For gaming, an i7 doesn't have much of an edge over the 965. Other stuff like video editing, and 3d modeling apps would make better use of the the hyper threading in the i7.
Don't forget the fact that the AM3 motherboard is less expensive than LGA1366 motherboard, and you don't have to pay a triple channel RAM (less expensive too).
You can save about ~100-150$ at least about RAM and motherboard, on AM3.

You can use dual channel RAM in a triple channel motherboard and vice-versa.

It's just meant to increase performance, which some benchmarks say it doesn't even do that.
Good to know something we barely hear about.
I thought you could only put 3gb or 6gb on these motherboards.
either i5 750 or phenom II 955
the i7 has no advantages over the i5 and the 965 is just a very slightly overclocked 955

Is this microcenter?
If so I'm running the 930 with a 470, I got the 930 up to a delightful 4GHz, and I couldn't be happier. But I also do a little render work so it makes more sense for me to get the i7.

Yup :)
Really? 4? It's clocked at like 2.8GHz currently.

Yeah, Corsair H50 was at microcenter for ~70$, so I grabbed that. And with a few hours of tweaking (And 48hrs of load testing) I have deemed my 4.02GHz Overclock stable.
I can't comment on the 955/965... but I am very pleased with what I got out of my i7/x58 system.
From what ive heard, 4 is tough to pull...Im thinking you just got a good piece of silicon

I don't know about that, I've heard of people pulling 4 out with a lot lower voltages than myself. I only got to 4 at 1.3v vcore.
And there was an odd hump as well, On stock voltages it went to 3.2 stable, but I couldn't get it any higher than that without going to 1.28v. 1.28 got me all the way to 3.8GHz, and .2v more and I was at 4 just fine.
I think that the 930s are good chips. (The funny thing is I've looked up my batch. And my batch are notoriously bad OCers.)

this, actually get the 955 if you're just gaming.
945
945
pretty much this
Agreed.

The i7 has advantages in rendering, but they don't perform much better in gaming.
Get an i5 750 or Phenom II 955 if you game.

You must have a very good cooler. What do you have?

he has an H50, and no, 945
Oh yeah, I just looked at the specs, the 945 is just like the 955 but .2 GHz slower.
Go with a 925, it's a 945 but 2.8GHz.
what the assfuck I thought the 945 was BE
Nope, but it's just the BE but with a lower clock rate.
Same with the 925.

With that reasoning you could keep going down and down the line till you hit 1ghz. But then a 965 would be a giant step up.
The 1090T is useless for gaming. The 6 cores won't be used.

You can overclock.
Yeah but it wears down the hours your CPU has to live. Plus, 965 is only $20 more, or should I say, mowing your parent's lawn one more time.
Also, we all know all 6 cores won't be used, but it makes alt-tabbing a hell of a lot easier. :X
Slithersoul, holy fuck. Are you stupid?
[editline]10:04PM[/editline]
I asked if the 945 was BE because that means unlocked multi, so it not being BE means it has a locked multi and so does the 925, so the lowest I would go is 955.

Spend a few minutes overclocking the 955 up to 3.4Ghz or spend a day of chores/extra few hours of work to get a 965.
get the i7 930, better clock for clock and more epeen
The 1090T is useless for gaming. The 6 cores won't be used.
On the 6core CPU's, when the 6 cores aren't being utilised it shut off 3 cores and raises the clock on the other 3 up to 3.6ghz.
get the i7 930, better clock for clock and more epeen
Yeah, it's an easy choice now between the 965 and the 930, but the 930 vs 955 isn't a very easy choice to make since there is a $40 difference.
i5 750
