• Building a wooden rifle, need advice/help/reference

Ok Facepunch, here's the deal For some time now, I've been thinking about making a life-size model of the Accuracy International L96A1 of wood. (not a working model, but with moving parts. Bolt handle, magazine, (possibly) the trigger) The main reasons i want to do this, is for shits'n'giggles, to occupy myself for those endless winter hours, and generally just make something i can be remotely proud of. The big problem is, i have very little experience with handiwork like this, so i'm coming here to receive all the advice i can. Is this plausible? how long would it take? Will i need :butt:-loads of materials? Help if you can! Now, my plan (currently) is to make the chassis (receiver/stock/pistolgrip/handguard/magwell) out of a single block of wood. The barrel could be anything from a broomstick to a metal pipe. The bolt and bolthandle will be a bit tricky, i think, but i hope i'll manage to find something thick and round that can be used. picture [editline]14th December 2010[/editline] note: It doesn't have to match every little detail, it's not gonna be a replica [editline]14th December 2010[/editline] Also, if i have put this in the wrong section, I'm sorry.
Get some parts from tediore, at least they don't make guns out of freaking wood. [sp]like you[/sp]
Get some parts from tediore, at least they don't make guns out of freaking wood. [sp]like you[/sp]
I don't see the problem in making it out of wood. It's supposed to have moving parts, but it is not supposed to be a working model. Besides, i'm from Denmark, so i don't have the slightest idea what Tediore is.
A friend of mine who is a carpenter's son made an awesome tompson , garant and AK out of wood. They look amazing.
I will draw up a plan for you.

Unless you are planning to shoot wooden bullets i suggest a metal gun.
you're 15 years old you're going to cut yourself
Unless you are planning to shoot wooden bullets i suggest a metal gun.
For the third time: NOT A WORKING MODEL
You should build it out of wood.
you're 15 years old you're going to cut yourself
Right, i'll cut myself. I also put my fingers in electrical outlets and try to drink from the bottles under the kitchen sink. [editline]14th December 2010[/editline]
You should build it out of wood.
No shit, Sherlock :frog:
Right, i'll cut myself. I also put my fingers in electrical outlets and try to drink from the bottles under the kitchen sink.
because it isn't possible to make a mistake or is it because you're invincible since you're a teen or maybe "I'll just make sure it doesn't happen :downs:"
because it isn't possible to make a mistake or is it because you're invincible since you're a teen or maybe "I'll just make sure it doesn't happen :downs:"
Of course mistakes can be made, but i don't think i would make less mistakes if i was 20. My age doesn't mean i'll go all "HURF DURF IMMA CUT DAT TREE UP" and surgically remove a quarter of my face. Touché, though :golfclap:

you need tools
Use PVC for the scope.
are you telling me a 40 year old is going to make as many mistakes as a 3 year old
Wait, wha- Who's talking about three year olds? Does a 40 year old shit himself and play with Lego? There's a vast difference between comparing 15yrs to 20+yrs, and comparing 3yrs to 40yrs
you need tools
I gave you a tool.
I gave you a tool.
thanks for sharing, this information has changed me in ways I didn't think possible
OP. What you need to do is get a very large block of wood, at least bigger than a real L96A1, and trace each side onto it. The left side, and the bottom for the general shape. Once that is cut out, all you need to do is sand it down so it looks correct. There you go now you have your basic gun. Carve out where the trigger will be and the bold and whatnot. [editline]14th December 2010[/editline] That's as far as I know, and most likely the quickest and easiest way. As long as you have a bandsaw and a belt sander.
Wood is pretty easy to work with, but it's not very forgiving. Just make plans, work slowly and carefully, and it should be fine. First and foremost you're going to want to figure out what wood you want to work with. I recommend poplar, since it's pretty cheap and is very easy to work with.
Allright I got this. First make the Bolt receiver, what ever, then make the actual body of the gun BUT cut it in half downwards. Now, the Bolt should have a diameter just enough to fit into the gun and be able too slide. It also should have a bigger circular end, as this will be inside the gun (thats why you cut the body in half) So basically after that glue the halves together with the bolt inside of it, there will be something blocking the Bolt from completely sliding out. So now you have a wooden Rifle(with a bolt)! Sorry if you don't understand, I might add pictures.
Go become the apprentice of that dude that made that one rifle, sword, and FP fort. Of course, you aren't worthy enough yet to be in his presence.
You'll shoot your eye out kid.
Black ops. :frogdowns:
Work slow man....
Use things for cutting wood.
Well, to give you a helpful comment for once, that friend of mine war 14 when he did those guns. The first thing he made was the stock. The receiver was a basic block with serveral smaller pieces attatched to form the detailed shape. The barell was metal though, so were the sights on the thompson. But let me tell you, this guy spent an insane amount of time on drawing plans to have it come out in exactly the right proportions, wich it did. He also had his father's workshop and very advanced tools.
After that, make it work and go shoot some fucking vampires with wooden bullets.
