I wonder what overambitious development hell awaits this time!

LOL at that reasoning for going to KickStarter.
No publisher is going to give him money after how horribly he mismanaged SOE. Everquest Next has been in development hell, Planetside 2 turned out to be a divisive disappointment in many eyes, and their only major success in recent years has been a Me-Too DayZ clone which I've heard isn't that good.
i am willing to fund a kickstarter that sends john smedley to space

Where do I fund this?
I mean, jesus, the sell-off of SOE was not something Sony did out of goodwill (Ok, maybe it was - More on that in a bit) to give them independence. SOE's headbanging with EQN (And all its weird and confusing prototypes and all), a handful of JP/Korean MMOs that SOE gambled on localizing which failed (RIP Wizardry Online), and the bad rap of Planetside 2's launch was bleeding Sony a shitton of money - Add to that that the PS4 port of Planetside 2 somehow slipped from Launch Title to late 2015, and ended up being kind of a crappy port at that, it was pretty clear that in addition to losing money that Sony didn't have, they couldn't keep up with company initiatives.
A company with less goodwill than Sony would have simply taken SOE out back and put one in the back of the head instead of selling them to the first idiot willing to part with their coin for a failing studio that hasn't produced results in over a decade. It's amazing that Daybreak has turned around as much as it has since then.
I fully expect at least 2 total combat revisions and then once they burned the original fans off the product they'll wait a few years then shut it down.
