Alright, I'm torn right now. I'm gonna get a heatsink in the mail tomorrow or the next day, and obviously need to get rid of the stock heatsink paste. JohnEdwards says using a Credit Card is the easiest way, and GhostofMe and MTMod say using rubbing alcohol. I think I'd rather use a Credit Card because of the least likeliness of me screwing up, although I would like to here some second opinions
Just rub it off with a credit-card and then some tissue jeeze. It's goddamn paste.
rubbing alcohol, above is dumb

how would you mess up with rubbing alcohol? Get a strong tissue, put the alcohol on it, and rub the paste off onto a plate or something. It's not like you have to do this with the CPU in the motherboard

I've seen people saying tissue would leave shit behind and fuck with temps slightly, but to be honest this sounds like more of a thing for EVERY DEGREE MATTERS people
Paper Towel + Rubbing Alcohol (70% is good enough).
Just rub it off with a credit-card and then some tissue jeeze. It's Gordon Freemandamn paste.
hehe, i love my greesemonkey script it replaces god with Gordon Freeman
anyway, OP scrape it off with a credit card then use a q-tip and rubbing alcohol to remove whatever's left

Why?
If it's "every degree counts" why not solve the real problem and sand down the thick silicon layer to the real copper heatsink in CPU
Lick it off
Lick it off
works everytime..
Lick it off
I lowered the average temp of my stomach 2 degrees by doing that!

because you're not going to get every bit off no matter how long you sit there with a credit card?
you are supposed to spread the paste with a credit card, not take it off :downs:
and that's not the ideal way.. just a dot in the center.. the size of a grain of rice..

Depends on the paste, thicker paste need more spreading.
As for removing the nickle not silcon, thats called lapping the processor. Its really time consuming and voids warranties, but it significantly improves cooling for high overclocks.
And once you get the hang of removing the paste, you could always try different methods of applying it if you've got a bottle of it laying around. Apply it to the CPU, set the heatsink on it, and then lift it off. Check to make sure the paste spread evenly. Clean the paste off and repeat with different patterns and amounts until you like what you see.

my bad reading, but yeah it depends on the paste..
and again my bad reading, I thought he was talking about removing thermal paste, not lapping the processor. I just quoted him and replied
Coffee filter + rubbing alcohol.
tissue end of
I use some cotton and rubbing alcohol.
Acetone, but not PURE acetone. Make sure you just the regular diluted stuff.
Or Goo Gone works really well too.
Best way - :sweep:

I use this stuff. Works very well to clean any surface that thermal paste has touched. Although rubbing alcohol also works very well, and is less expensive.

I was gonna get that, but it didn't fit my budget so well >_>
Just get some of the fucking rubbing alcohol already.
credit card, unless you are working on multi layer blade servers, you aren't going to care much about +3 F or less
The best way to do it is to remove the motherboard with all parts removed accept for the cpu, cover in comet toilet cleaner, get the motherboard and CPU damp, scrub with a rag and rinse.
Then remove the CPU and put both of them in your dryer separately.
I used a q-tip and that alcohol thing to clean my cpu after failing epically at applying paste. :(
