Makes sense.
Super Street Fighter 4 had something like this on the 3DS. There was a control scheme where you could bind special moves to the touch screen. Instant Sonic Booms and Zangief piledrivers.
This is really a damn good move, I'm sure any other company would just shoehorn in some compatibility just so they could say it was there, regardless of the effects it would have on gameplay. Good to see they've thought it through.
I presume we'll be able to use the pro controller for the game? Either way, I'm liking this balance on the game pad.
The gamepad was dumb on the Wii version, the strongest attacks you could just push a stick in a direction without any effort at all, compared to the other methods where you actually had to time it.
That means doing away with more ridiculous systems, like tripping which occurred in the Wii game.
YES
If the gamepad were to have any functionality for the New Super Smash Bros, I think it should just act as a spectator for the match where you could move the camera around on your own gamepad screen and take pictures without disrupting the gameplay, similar to how you can change the camera in the replays in Brawl. Pausing would be problem, but that can be fixed by removing the pausing function on the gamepad or just not have it pause the match for everyone else playing the game so that it can't be abused.
There go my dreams of playing on a giant Pictochat 2 stage where the gamepad player can draw giant penises for people to jump on.
Well, off-screen gameplay could work if you use the Gamepad like a mini TV and have friends huddle near it :v:

For more silly matches between friends I mean.
I really hope they don't remove the ability to play on the gamepad.
I really hope they don't remove the ability to play on the gamepad.
Of course the controller will work. It's just that the gamepad will offer zero differences from other players in terms of control. Maybe touchscreen menu control but that'll be as far as it'll go.
Tripping is confirmed for being removed? THANK YOU! THERE IS A GOD!
You can't use gamecube controllers with the Wii U, sadly. But I plan to pick up an adapter that will allow me to, because I refuse to play Smash Bros without one.
Why not make gamepad can use all they feature, maybe not in MULTIPLAYER but Make IT use only for Singleplayer then ... pff all the new features useless now ...

Its essentially like you ripped your gamecube controller in half.
I don't think it's that. The Gamecube controller felt alot more natural for Brawl than anything else, though.
I know I am in the minority, but I dont understand all the hate on playing brawl with the wiimote. The motion smash was essentially the exact same thing as hitting the C-Stick on the Gamecube. (Plus it meant that I could still keep fighting even if I had to scratch my head because I could wave the remote to fight when needed and go back to buttons when I was done.) That being said, I'll see what playing it on the Gamepad is like first, then I'll decide weather to stick with that or go back to Wiimote+nunchuck.
Let the player with the game-pad have a constant free-moving camera, and have it so if you replay the match, you can choose to watch from the perspective of the game-pad player. Commentary, ho.

It will probably be the best way to play the game.
Have you picked up a Wii U Pro controller? If not, you really should. It will probably be the best way to play the game.
The classic pro controllers are nice too, and cheaper if you already have Wii motes
the wii u pro controller looks fine, but why is the right analog stick above the face buttons
YES
What's the purpose for tripping anyway? I'm sure it's not just some sort of "let's see what happens" thing, right?
What's the purpose for tripping anyway? I'm sure it's not just some sort of "let's see what happens" thing, right?
a bad game mechanic Nintendo is admitting is bad by removing it
I'd like to see the Wii U gamepad be used for some sort of extra spectate or match record mode.
What's the purpose for tripping anyway? I'm sure it's not just some sort of "let's see what happens" thing, right?
It was to level the playing field between casual players and veterans.
I wonder what they'll do with final smashes. They better balance them out some more. Some of them are worthless, while others can kill you twice in a row. Anyone else got pushed out of the top of the screen by the landmaster right after being respawned?

While I enjoyed Melee and Brawl with the GC controller myself, I personally preferred using the Wii and Nunchuck when playing Brawl. It works fine, even if it's a nontraditional controller.
