You say that like I'm specifically referring to curing cancer. My point is how does his research benefit society? Because now we know how pop music changes over the years? What valuable information. It just seems like a waste of his profession to be doing stuff like this.

I think information they are researching is useful because it may open hopes of shutting it down.

Because having access to information about lots of different things either useless or not is always a good thing, and helps us to understand everything better.
