Getting blue screens a litte bit too often for comfort
31 replies, posted
You guys probably get shit like this all the time. But for a while my computer has been getting lot of blue screens, usually when playing rather intensive things like games. (Although I have had a few rare times when it just blue screens when I'm just surfing the net or something like that.) Or sometimes when the computer is booting up, it blue screens, the next time around prompting me to use Windows Repair or Start Up Normally. Of course, I pick Windows Repair, and every time all it can do is use System Restore. (And there have been those really rare blue screens during the Repair.)
My drivers are all up to date, and I don't have any clue as what the problem may be. They aren't that frequent, and after a crash and bootup (Successful or not,) I usually don't have any more trouble for the time being.
I know I should have been recording those number and codes from the blues, but most of the time I couldn't be arsed or I was still in that mentality that this would all go away eventually (I've since abandoned that idea.) Or I didn't know what to record. So if anyone could tell me what to record that would aid in my repairs, it would be appreciated.
I'm running Windows 7
Thanks. :h:
What are your temperatures right before it happens? Can you run speedfan and monitor them up to the point it happens. It could be an overheating problem. You can also turn off auto shutdown so you can record the blue screens error code which would be very helpful.
Alright then, I'll be running this speedfan thing, but what if it crashes when I'm gaming or I cannot see the temperature before it blue screens?
And I'd like to know where this auto shutdown setting is located at. (Another reason why I haven't been able to record them was because it would always reboot before I could get a pen and paper. :saddowns:)
How I located the Auto Shutdown place (on Vista)
Control Panel -> System -> System Protection -> Advanced -> Under "Startup and Recovery" press Settings

You could have at least wrote down the numbers, help us, help you.
Well, I've gotten a crash, whilst playing TF2. "0x000000C4" was all I could get.
(what the hell? I didn't rate myself friendly)
Do you have Norton Antivirus?
[editline]15th December 2010[/editline]
If so...
Option A:
Uninstall it and get something that doesn't suck and crash your system.
Option B:
Follow these instructions http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325672
Re-install video drivers.
Post Specs : http://www.piriform.com/speccy
And for temps use HWMonitor. Speedfan sometimes reports the wrong temperature.

I do not have Norton installed. Do I still follow that guide?
And specs.

Get speed-fan to monitor your temperatures, and have it log to a file. That way, when it crashes, you will know what temperature it was at. So, set it up and go play crysis :buddy:
I just uninstalled it and replaced it with HWMoniter :saddowns:
Edit:
'Nother crash. The numbers were:
0x000000C4 (0x00000091, 0x00000000, 0xFFFFFA80047C59A0, 0x00000000)
(Something like this...
you can disable it so you can write down the crash
should be a setting in the bois
also HWMoniter is good

Did it give you a filename? Either way, try Option B and see if that helps.

It looks like a driver is cocking up someplace.
http://www.errordecoder.com/stop-error-codes/STOP-0x000000C4.html
Check your event log, under Windows logs > System, post any Critical/Warning/Errors around the time of the last bluescreen.
Well I tried that Option B, restarted my computer, and went to take a piss. When I return, I found a Blue Screen...
Anyways the code for that one was
0x0000007E (0xFFFFFFWFFC0000005, 0xFFFFF8002BF890D, 0xFFFFF880033B5468, 0xFFFFF880033B4CD0)
and when I restart, it apparently froze right when it says "Welcome", finally when I make it passed another restart, within a minute, I get a bluescreen saying:
Name: BAD_POOL_HEADER
0x00000019 (0x0000000000000003, 0xFFFFFA8002460310, 0xFFFFFA8002460310, 0xF7FFFA8002460310)
Quite frustrating.

Will it boot normally in safe mode?
[editline]16th December 2010[/editline]
If so, follow the steps in Option B to turn Driver Verifier off.
After that, if it can boot normally again, get into the Device manager, and tell me how many Audio drivers are installed.
I only see one.
Really, if you're getting blue screens enough to interfere with anything, I'd suggest just formatting.
Really, if you're getting blue screens enough to interfere with anything, I'd suggest just formatting.
Reformatting is not the awnser to everything, The only blue screens I get are when my hardware decides to fail, most of the time my harddrives.
I only see one.
Well, I'm out of ideas.
Could you log the temperature then by setting it to log to a file, tell us whats going on with the temperatures. I highly suspect this, or the RAM cards are loose.
In fact, check your RAM cards now. Take them out then replace them again
Unplug your hard drive and then boot the computer, that way you know if its the hard drive or not. If possible take your hard drive out and see if it work in another computer.
If possible take your hard drive out and see if it work in another computer.
DO NOT do this. If you even try and let windows start booting on a different machine, it will royally fuck your windows installation from it detecting completely different hardware and trying to install completely new drivers.

Or, if it requires a different HAL, it won't even make it past the loading screen.
Well, I'll try Trumple's suggestion.
Buuut, when playing TF2, I got a blue screen, same old 0x00000C4. But when rebooting, I get a Blue Screen with:
The driver is mismanaging system PTEs
0x000000DA (0x0000000000000504, 0xFFFFF6FC40078D98, 0x0000000000000020, 0x000000000000F1B3
The next boot prompting me to use Startup Repair. When it was repairing, it blue screened.
with
0x0000001E (OxFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFF8000C0F38E2, 0x0000000000000000, 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF)
Now, each time I boot, it prompts me to launch Startup Repair, but the next two times I retried it, it blue screened.
I haven't tried for a about half an hour now. I'll go see what happens.
[editline]16th December 2010[/editline]
Okay, so my cousin already started it up, it seemed to have booted normally, and he said that he didn't use startup repair.
What is your video card, have you changed it recently? What is your on-board video card?
I have a NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT, had since almost 2008 I think.
Run memtest, i have a feeling this is RAM related
[editline]17th December 2010[/editline]
and if that gives nothing, try reinstalling windows, it will replace all the cruical files while leaving your stuff intact
I'm sorry, I don't know what memtest is, do I have to download it?
[editline]17th December 2010[/editline]
Also, does anyone know how to make HWmoniter log temps? I can't find any obvious option.
memtest download link, extract ISO and burn to disc, then boot from it.
http://www.memtest.org/download/4.10/memtest86+-4.10.iso.zip
I HAVE to burn it to a disc?
