I was going to build a new computer for gaming, when I was originally looking around at the prices last month a 5850 was around £200.
Just checked some websites now and I was shocked to see;
eBuyer no longer even has them on their website,
Overclockers.co.uk cheapest one is now [b]£240[/b]
scan.co.uk cheapest is £220
This fucking sucks! Aren't prices supposed to go down damnit?!

It's a supply and demand thing, everyone wants those new cards, nobody carries more than five at a time.
If your motherboard supports Crossfire, you can grab two 5770s for the same price, which perform about ~25% better than a single 5850. Just make sure your PSU is up to scratch.

Yes, in games that have decent Crossfire support. Still a mean feat, though, for 2/3 of the price.

500-600W from a decent brand should cover you plenty.
Great. Looking at the prices a single is around 120 at the moment, so I might just buy one and get another if I feel it is needed. How good is the 5770? Will I be able to run all games out at the moment (bar crysis) on full graphics at 1680x1050 do you think?
A single 5770? Easily.

CF 5770s can max Crysis at 1920x1200 with 4x AA at around 36 FPS average.

On another note, I can't decide if I should wait for the Christmas sale on eBuyer to start before I buy my rig.. It will be in 32 days but I'm not sure if price reductions will only be on some selected items or just overall reductions. What do you guys think?

Unless any of the components you're looking at are running low on stock, I see no reason not to wait until the sale. If you wait but don't end up saving any money, then that's not big loss. But if you don't wait and end up missing an opportunity to save some cash, then you'll be kicking yourself. It's up to you.

or you could wait until you need the extra power then get the second card, because they'll be cheaper then
and most likely just on certain items, if you can wait that long it might be worth seeing if there's anything good
