• My computer overheats a lot and the fan doesn't go very fast

When playing games my computer seems to get very hot without me noticing and my fan doesn't spin faster it just spins casually then when it gets too hot my computer's overheat protection kickes in and force shutdowns my computer (like holding the button down ) and won't turn on for 20 seconds although if I have one of those heat tracker apps on my fan spins up and slows down, so if I remembered to keep opening the app every time I need it it won't be a problem. Please help :)
By default the BIOS should control the fans, if they do not try getting some PWM fans if your motherboard supports them - these are the fans your motherboard can send a signal to to either speed up or slow down - failing that get a temperature probe set for your PC and abjustable fan control unit (Sits in one of your hard drive bays)
non PWM fans generally run at max anyway, I would suggest cleaning out the fan if possible and if it's a laptop well then I'm not suprised it's over heating you could also cap the frame rate and reduce the amount of load = less heat
Yes it's a laptop but I can't find the adjusting the fan speed anywhere. It does it automatic which is totally normal maybe I should put less pressure on it as I play Crysis 3 with medium graphics, but the less graphic intense games that have a stable 60 fps crash my computer as well. thanks for the reply I'll try cleaning it out it is very dusty [editline]15th October 2014[/editline]
Yeah I know that the bios controls it otherwise my fan wouldn't be going before windows starts (sorry if I'm sounding rude)
Can you post the complete specs, make and model. There is a good chance your heatsink is full of dust. Depending on what model it is, you can probably clean it yourself.
I would guess that the inside face of the heatsink inside the laptop is clogged (the side that faces the blower.) These clog up very easily and are almost always very difficult to clean because there is no easy access other than disassembling the laptop.
non PWM fans generally run at max anyway
Three wire fans rely on the motherboard to control the speed. Most motherboards for the past decade have been able to control these fans by changing the voltage, but by default are usually set to leave the fan running at full speed. Some three wire fans have thermistors to control speed based on how much heat there is going through the fans, but these don't work well and are fairly rare outside the OEM server market.

I'll get a new cooling pad as my other one broke but thanks for help.
