It's good to know they're actually trying to push the UK to become more technologically involved with the world.

I can't wait till we see an anti-trust lawsuit claiming Google is "anti-competitive" because they offer fair prices for good speeds.
I didn't know the targets were that ambitious, hope they can meet them
i'm on 150Kb/s :( yes that is bits
The absolute minimum that everyone in the country should have... I'd say 10 mbps

That should be a reachable goal, I take advantage of being in a larger population centre and using BT Infinity, getting these sort of speeds:

If major population centres can be supplied those sort of speeds, everyone else could be easily supplied a mere 10Mb/s.
What I really hope doesn't happen is that they reach these targets and then go "right that's the internet sorted" and do nothing for 10 years

I would know, in my state (Utah) we have a UTOPIA (Utah Telecommunication Open Infrastructure Agency) Which is making a HUGE push to have tax-funded (to put the lines in, then the government is paid back the money) fiber put in, after the fiber is put in it is sold to various carriers such as Xmission, and other telecom companies.
Comcast can't have that, and have poured hundreds of thousands into lobbying my city's government (state capital) so that it WON'T happen.
Sucks really.
Although a few of the cities have pledged (means they are paying, as a city, to fund it) and had it install, we're a long way from having state-wide open-fiber networks.

Are you suggesting that the UK isn't very technologically involved at present? Because that would be very naive.

The internet here is pretty awful in some places.

but this is more to do with cheap internet so, eh.
did you know, that the uk has the largest dark fibre network in the world? it was layed down in the 20th century, but the majority of it is still unused. someone should buy it up and use it

well, it isnt
eg, with VM I'm meant to be getting 100mb/s but I get barely 20 with an upload of 0.2mb/s, before I usedto get 51 mb/s with my 50mb/s package. This means that the uk's fibre architecture is pretty technologically backward, and the government isn't really doing much about it. Right now they've extended the deadline for the 2mb/s for 98% of the country another year or two, it'll probably be faster soon to get internet from surrounding countries with fast broadband
The LSE defines "basic" broadband as services offering speeds of up to 2Mbps. "Fast" broadband ranges from 2Mbps to 24Mbps, and "superfast" exceeds 24Mbps.
I'm surprised to see how far the UK's behind on bandwidth, in 2009 I had a 50/50Mbps and my mom 70/70Mbps, and that was the average connection speed in the area we lived.
the problem is, those services are getting oversubscribed as the current fibre/wires can't handle the number, meaning lods of traffic shaping (which gives you amazing results for speedtests but shitty ones for actually browsing)

I didn't mean technology in general, I meant to reference the fact Internet is pretty slow, compared to other countries, in Britain, some people struggle to get over 2Mb/s, whilst some others struggle to get any less than 75Mb/s. It's the old 'The rich get richer and the poor get poorer' thing, just with internet speeds, because they develop and enhance already fast internet speeds, but give no attention to slower, more rural areas.
