I've always hated netbooks, but I'm actually getting one, are there any good ones out there? I want a netbook that can actually DO THINGS, not just edt documents and go on the nternet I really don't want to deal with windows xp, can any netbooks handle a basic version of Windows 7, or am I stuck with linux?
No.
Someone I know has a Dell netbook which had Windows 7 Starter. I would expect most netbooks now to have Win 7 instead of XP.
My netbook runs 7 Ultimate perfectly. As for doing anything above 'edt documents and go on the nternet'... well, you aren't going to be playing games on them any time soon. Anything above World of Goo is a no-go.
I might want to get a netbook too, just for being able to run around and download stuff because my current internet connection is satellite and has bandwidth limits.
Well i mean video editng, audio editing, etc. ...so far no one has suggested any model yet....
I have an MSI Wind U100 if that helps, I like it and there are newer models out in the Wind range. Also Video/Audio editing shouldn't be too bad as long as you upgrade the RAM in it (the U100 has a SODIMM slot that supports an extra 1GB of RAM)
Well, I would've thought the low screen resolutions of netbooks would make video editing difficult.
Well, I would've thought the low screen resolutions of netbooks would make video editing difficult.
Also the fact that pretty much all of them have a single core 1.6GHz Atom processor. OP, the purpose of a netbook is to pretty much NOT do any of those things. They're for easy portability to surf the net, do basic word processing, and have long battery life (mine gets about 12 hours).
I was looking for a netbook as I was going to get one at some point, the best one I dug up was the EeePC 1005HA, check it out.
1005HA is great I have one, does eveerything but 720p youtube videos
My sister got an HP mini for free for getting Verizon internet, and it is a netbook and I put Win7 on it and runs things perfectly. EeePC is a good choice you should get it.

[editline]01:57AM[/editline] Also my linux netbook can run the Battle for Wesnoth, who needs 3D and shit anyway. But if you want to do video editing, linux is not the way to go.
I've got a question to throw out there rather than making a new thread. I too have been looking at netbooks and need it primarily for audio editing. Nothing super serious, mainly just being able to record with Audacity and such. Would this be sufficient: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Acer/13430265 Or should I save up the extra cash for this?: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Acer-AS5517-1216/13723682 Or perhaps someone could recommend one better than either of those? I'm not quite the expert when it comes to processors and stuff and what's necessary for different tasks. I'd like to not spend more than $500 at most, preferably less if I can still get a decent machine.
don't get an acer, they are crap Asus is a very good brand or lenovo, nice hinges, long battery life (on the 1005HA)
Alright, any good Asus or Lenovo for under $500 in particular you might recommend?
If you get a netbook with the Nvidia ION GPU you can do some moderate gaming. I have the HP Mini 311 and it handles a lot of games i throw at it just fine.
I'm getting a Gateway LT2104u on monday for $329.99. It's really thin compared to the ASUS in the same price range plus this has a 250GB HDD. But I'm just looking for a netbook to do what a netbook is supposed to do, so I am not looking for one that can game or edit 1080p videos. If you are wanting to do gaming or something like that then you should just save a little more and get a laptop.
Could wait for the ION2 to come out.
So far I guess this is my best bet: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002ZLOR5Q/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&s=pc Asus Eee 1201N, 250 gb hard drive, 2GB DDR2 RAM, 4gb max (so I'm going to put and extra 2gb stick) and like pretty much every netbook, a single core, 1.6 processor, I'm told it can play at 1080p too
The new alienware. [editline]05:08PM[/editline] can do a lot of things such as gaming [editline]05:08PM[/editline] it is expensive though
try wait for the ION2 and the dual core atom to come out but if you cant wait then ASUS is a good choice, especially the 1xxxhx series.
I can run CS 1.6 and similar games just fine. Might wait a bit for better net books to come out though.
