Battlefield 2 crashes to desktop whenever I try to join a game. It doesn't even get to the loading screen except in singleplayer, and even then it still crashes after it's finished loading. Google turns up nothing. Does anyone know how to fix this?
First thing I'd try is making sure there aren't any problems with the game files. If its the Steam version just right click, properties, local files tab, then "verify integrity of game cache". You should also make sure your sound and video drivers are up to date. When I played BF2 it was sorta picky about those.
Unfortunately BC2 is plagued with CTD issues, it'll be fine for one patch and then the next it crashes left right and centre. Try reinstalling.
He is talking a BF2 not BC2.
This might help: Go 'my documents' and find the folder 'Battlefield 2' and delete that. This usually fixes issues like this. Once you do that you will have to reset all your settings in game and then try to join a server.
I've already tried verifying game cache files, that didn't solve it. I'll try to update my drivers and delete that file.
Does it just crash without error? Or with an error? If so, post the error log.
I have this problem too, I'm re downloading the game and I will post back when I get a chance to test the fixes here id re downloading does not work
Turn off the Steam in-game overlay. Try that.

He's talking about crashing to desktop, not getting kicked from games.
He's talking about crashing to desktop, not getting kicked from games.
The thing is, it fixed my crashing to desktop. Hmm.
And no, disabling steam overlay didn't help, and there weren't any errors either.
No one knows a solution to this? Really?
No one knows a solution to this? Really?
Try messing with sound settings. It also had something to do with my crashing errors. Try different settings. I know it's wierd, but it also helped me.
I can't change the sound settings because it also crashes when I open audio options.
I can't change the sound settings because it also crashes when I open audio options.
Then that's your problem. Go to My Documents, then Battlefield 2, then Profiles, it should be like 001 or depending on how many accounts 002 for the 2nd. Go to audio. Open in notepad and find this line.
AudioSettings.setProvider "software"
Make sure it says that.
Yeah, that's exactly what it says. Also, updating drivers doesn't help.
Yeah, that's exactly what it says. Also, updating drivers doesn't help.
Try replacing software with putting Hardware.
Nothing changed, still crashes.
Nothing changed, still crashes.
Well the last thing I can think of is changing it so the sound quality is high. Make sure the line says this.
AudioSettings.setSoundQuality "High"
Also, If that doesn't work try setting it to medium and then low. Also, try this with both Hardware and Software for the render settings.
Alrite, I'll give that a whirl in a bit.

For me it was having anti-aliasing on. I turned it off and the game ran like a champ after that
anti aliasing was already off, and changing the Audio file doesn't seem to be working.
