Well, it seems I'm not making that laptop thread after all, but I've come across a deal my uncle is willing to make with me.
He works for a computer company and he gets a discount on parts and he is making me a computer, and here are the specs:
600watt PSU
2.2gh amd dual core
nvidia gforce 8400
2gb ram
150gb 7200rpm internal HDD
no monitor :/
Ethernet cable, and system cables.
16x DVD / CD drive
He says he'll give it to me for $180 or so.
Is this worth it, he said he can run good FPS on Crysis on Med.
I'll pay that much in a heartbeat, I just need to know if I am getting ripped off?
$180 seems fair-ish.
Keep in mind that's pretty shitty, but it can run most games.
For $180, that's a good deal.
buy it then upgrade it with the money you save
Forget about it if you want to play newest games on it with decent framerate.
But price is pretty good.
With an 8400 there is no way in hell it's running Crysis on Medium, unless it's at 640x480. I'd talk him down to maybe $150.
It's his uncle he's buying from, i don't think he'd try to rip him off.

More like, his uncle doesn't know shit himself.
Well, the main thing I am buying this for is source engine games so I just want to know if it's worth getting to see a major improvement over my laptop
With a really good config + overclocking, it can run a Valve map at 50 fps, on a real server about 25.

These are the specs:

Really shitty, but I am hoping for a major improvement
its a good deal, but why the fuck would you want it
tell him to keep the gpu and get yourself an 8800GT off ebay or something

You'll run source games smooth as silk
K, thanks, I really don't care about appearance more like performance.
Umm, same thing-ish.
Which is why you build your own computer using www.newegg.com
I would aslo get the deal, scrap some of the parts and then use it to build a better system, its quite a good deal for that price.
Do you know what CPU is is specifically? You could probably upgrade it to a 720 or something and the graphics card to a 4850; with those you could run source on high with a very good frame rate for only ~$200 extra.
for 180 bucks, go for it, then buy a better GPU and you'll be fine

i doubt it. Its probably a AM2 socket

Either AM2, or Socket 939.
Well, after what you said I asked him if I could have it for $150 and I am currently waiting for a reply.
