• How much can a nights REST get in the way of a nights SLEEP?

Say someone was to fail in getting a whole nights sleep and instead laid conscious the whole night. Technically one would still be "rested", but how much could one depend on the energy gained over night?
Not a lot. There is a big difference between actual sleep and just resting.
the best thing you can do is waking up thinking you must get up, but its just 3 or 4 o clock of the morning so you can keep sleeping :D
I was thinking the other day, what makes sleep different than just laying down? you're not doing much more work just laying there than you are sleeping
I was thinking the other day, what makes sleep different than just laying down? you're not doing much more work just laying there than you are sleeping
Your brain is still making conscious thoughts and doing stuff manually when you just take a rest, while when you're sleeping, you don't constantly have thoughts flood your mind, using up your energy, and it concentrates on having a nice sleep.
Well, the reason I asked this was because I was suffering from it right now. I can't get any sleep. I've decided to take a powernap which can substitute for sleep in emergencies (according to the interwebs), and live on an energy drink until Maths class where I will take another power nap.
Energy drinks will just mess up your sleep patterns, and I'd recommend avoiding them entirely.

Next time you level up choose to increase your stamina instead of magicka and health
I find watching tv for 30 minutes usually fixes not being able to get to sleep while i am tired and should be able to sleep.
It may sound silly but your brain kind of defrag's when it's sleeping, placing every memory you have from that day in the correct place kind of thing, I watched a great video on youtube about it.

Your thoughts don't use up energy, your brain is more active while asleep than it would be awake. You use less energy being asleep because you don't have to worry about as many functions going on. Everything goes on autopilot, your senses get suspended slightly and you go through sleep paralysis so your voluntary muscles are suspended too. The only physical things going on are the functions you need to survive, grow, and heal. It is also a toilet for your emotions and being woken up from a dream can put you in a shit mood. Note that everyone dreams in their sleep, they simply do not remember most of them." ~Sleep and Dreams megathread
