So I keep reading that the iOS 5 update erases everything. How do I update my iPad from 4.3.5 to 5.0 without losing my apps? I'm an Android/Windows person so explain this in Apple-stupid terms please.
Back it up.
Plug it into itunes, Itunes must be 10.5.
Your device should appear on the side, right click and select backup.

The backup will restore everything
The backup will restore everything
Obviously leaving the OS intact, right?
Yup yup yup. The backups just hold all your settings, messages, apps, saves, notes, photos etc etc
Yup yup yup. The backups just hold all your settings, messages, apps, saves, notes, photos etc etc
Gotcha. So I just did the backup. Now, run the update, then do a restore?
Thank ye kind sir.
I didn't even back anything up from my phone. I just updated it and everything was still there.

it backsup and restores automatically with this update.
it backsup and restores automatically with this update.
Ah okay, so the manual backup is needed for the automatic restore... But damn is it going slow.

Mine didn't.
It got wiped, but that's ok because fresh starts are nice.
I have a question also. How is the IOS 5 on an Ipod Touch 3g? Does the battery last longer than it did with the IOS 4? I'm real hesitant to download this because I hate how fast my battery drains because of the IOS 4.
Thought I might as well post this in here as it is also kind of related, but how do I upgrade from an Ios 5 beta to the real thing? when i check for updates on Itunes it just says i have the current version.
Man Apple is fucking stupid. I did the full backup, and it restored automatically. But! No music or pics made it back onto this damn iPad.
Content such as music and pictures stay on your computer and don't get stored in the backup and rather just as an index. If you want it to sync quickly after restoring, then put the cable into your computer. Otherwise, it will download purchased apps and music via WiFi.
I know that if I've got a 32gb device full of content, I don't want my daily backup to be 32gb.
