• Cannot access certain external hard drive folders on my laptop

So, I rely on my Laptop to sync my iPhone with music, etc, but recently the folders Music and Video have become locked somehow so that they can only be viewed on my desktop. It gives me a generic "You do not have permission to view this folder" error. I'm not sure how this happened and there doesn't seem to be any way around it on my laptop. Does anyone have any ideas?
Are you running windows 7? If so, try going into the folder's properties, then to the security tab. Hit advanced at the bottom. Select change permissions. Select your user and hit Edit... Change all the options to allow, and Ok out of all the windows and try accessing the folder again.
Are you suggesting doing that on the laptop? Because I can't access the security tab on there, just tells me I don't have permission to :ohdear: And yes, both systems are running Windows 7.
Are you sure your account has administrative credentials?
Yes.
Which version of Windows 7 are you running with?
Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my PC, Windows 7 Home on my Laptop.
Via your desktop, can you go to the folders in question and take a screenshot like the first picture in nige111's post (i.e. properties > security), what I'd like to see, is if your laptop admin group is still a member in that dialgoue and what permissions they have.
There's nothing from my laptop on there.
Ok, add it back in by doing the following (assuming your laptops name is LAPTOP): Click edit, click add, type LAPTOP\Dash (assuming your username is the same), click OK, then ensure it has full control. Then click ok to everything and post a screenshot. That should work (fingers crossed!).
Uh, where should I be typing that? Most of the boxes seem to be locked.
Uh, where should I be typing that? Most of the boxes seem to be locked.
are you REALLY sure you're an administrator? Check the local user groups.
Yes I'm sure I'm an administrator.. This is the only account on the computer. [editline]07:00PM[/editline] I also tried the hidden Root Admin account, it looked exactly the same there.
Enter the text in the only field you can, the big one on the bottom.
I just get a "Name not found" error when I do that. The laptop isn't under the locations button either.
Goto the "enter object name" so your account name, then goto "check names". It should fill in.
I've been having this kind of problem since I used to use XP(now on 7) I just got this: http://windows7themes.net/tweaks/takeownership.zip and everything works perfect. It adds a new option when you right click a folder: "Take Ownership". Hope this helps.
Well, I sorted it out. It seems that while Windows Media Player's streaming service is active it disabled access to the folders from outside my computer (with anything other than a network link.) So whenever I want to use it on another computer I just have to re-start my external HDD. Thanks for the assistance, chaps.
Even if you are or aren't an Admin you should try the program wholockme. You can get it here. It's a simple install and it should show you the reason why it's locked. It's not entirely tested with Win7 but it should work. [editline]11:53AM[/editline] Ah crap solution ninja'd
